So, been looking at the flock extra hard this weekend thinking ahead to next weekend's swap - think I might take some birds, because I'm fairly certain I'll want to bring some home and I need to maintain the illusion of not gaining birds with DH. Of course, HE is the one who keeps coming home with names of more people who want to get on the egg list with us and he knows we are already at capacity as far as the "spare" eggs, so to add people to the list I have to add birds to the production line (or at least figure out who my freeloaders are and replace them with working girls). It's hard because the ones I find myself consistently putting at the top of the "gone" list are ones I know are actually laying right now - so that seems a bit counter-productive......but if I can replace them with some nice point-of-lay pullets..........

only the buffs ?

Ol mare, There is one vendor that comes all the time in a pick-up with tons of laying hens in those little chicken cages. Like the old fashion ones only plastic. Dont buy those. they are sick.

Yes I did only introduce the one hen. I know It's gonna be hard on her. Gonna have to keep an eye on them for awhile. Granny you're too funny. Lol. This site is like one big family though. And everyone has been so friendly. I told two crows that I wish there was a way that all of us on this site could have a neutral meeting spot so we could all meet in person. I know that's impossible but it sure would be nice. By the way, for those that I haven't meet, I'm from north Carolina. Glad to meet y'all! :)

I assume you have rir chickens ? so 3 hens and a roo? we gonna have to fix that. little something called chicken math. You dont need to be good with math to learn this kind. 1+1=3 2+3=16. before you know it you say, whos counting ? I am going to call you red !

Hi Roost! Welcome to the crazy place. Lol

Mare - Chicken racist - that's a hoot. When people buy chickens that have a sign saying it is a whatever a novice isn't going to know the difference. You can't help what you got. You are taking someone else's word that they are what they say.

I will post pics of my Silkies with big red floppy combs and one of my 2 campbell ducks is a blue runner. The things looked the same side by side. Had I not researched that duck I wouldn't have 3 quality runners now. I'm not totally lame though since I figured the silky wasn't silky right away just a poor example. But if I had not seen a real one I would have been proud of it & thought that was what they looked like.

You can argue yourself blue but they are are probably happy with their example even if it's not a quality example. You should hear dog owners who bought from some pet shops defending their purebred hybrid (show me the AKC papers). That chicken in question could be a production RIR and they failed to mention production to the buyer. If she keeps reading and learning she will figure it out. :)

She should have had a what's wrong with my chicken thread.

Yeah I think I've learned that chicken math lol. Can't wait to get more hens. My better half ask me why I didn't give one of the hens away. I told her, oh I forgot to tell you that we're getting several more hens and before you know it, we may have to add another roo lol. Gotta save up to build a bigger coop though.

newfie, my GS picked up a "mixed" silkie and its the prettyist thing. every thing i see is correct for a silkie but the colors are all over the place. beautiful blue ears, smashed black comb one foot has 6 toes. LOL
Red, I heard old pallets make good coops. I cant figure that one out myself but they look good. Have you checked out the coops here yet ?
