Morning! Heelers can be really good or really bad. Usually the later without training. There are lots of things you can do, starting with teaching the command "leave it" well away from the chickens. Edit to add: such a good page with so many other helpful links! I was having trouble with "down" also (with both dogs) so now I've got some new direction. We'll work on it today!

Prong collars are not supposed to impale your dog and choke collars are not supposed to cut off their air supply. They are a gentle reminder for people with no strength.
