LOL - no incubator here, or that'd be sorely tempting (who am I kidding, it's tempting anyway). SS are a no go at all the area stores - not even on the list of breeds they can/will special order. Think I may just have to pick up the others I have on my list for now and then keep an eye open for folks starting to sell off their excess birds, etc or find a local breeder (have seen a few on FB, etc - just none with chicks currently available)

YIKES, Granny!!! So glad that a fire did not take hold and cost you even more - so sorry for the losses you did have, but glad it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

So you have thrown that light away now?

This is exactly why I never use heat lamps, never, never, never......
I use two lights or one heat light and one heat bulb. The bulb I have is 100 watts and hangs low enough for them to get under. The heat light is higher up. I agree though that 250 watts is way hotter than is needed. The red lights do come in lower wattages but only one line.

I use regular 100 watt light bulbs in a ceramic socket.

I've used regular light bulbs but chicks don't get to sleep well with the light on 24/7. Though right now my basement lights are on 24/7 because every thing goes off if I turn off the entire basement. I'd prefer them not to but I can't rewire the house.

A lot of people say their chicks can't/don't sleep when they use regular light bulbs. I guess my chicks are different or something, they sleep just fine.
Iv'e read that they also eat more. Which is good in that the grow quicker. As long as they don't die on me I don't care.

I threw away one appliance extension cord , 2 of those 6 outlet plugs. they were melted to each other. 2 of the red light bulbs had busted in the base. Because i have no choice, I used the needle nose pliers to remover the light and put new smaller watt bulbs in. I unplugged any unnecessarys. my seramas need more heat then other babies. the baby in the house that pipped this morning died as well.
