You talkin about me, granny? ;) I'm still around. Busy with a whole lot of "hurry up and wait." Starting meals tomorrow, but I'll be in town all day with the doctor and my hair appt.

Down to 53 eggs in the bator. They go to lockdown tomorrow.

My kid graduated kindergarten this morning. Crazy where time goes. We've been to two grad parties this year, one for high school and one for college. So now Miss Priss thinks she needs one too. So I put up streamers and baked cupcakes. We have about a dozen college kids here for her "guests."

Here's a picture of a cool looking chick in my brooder:

We've had them before. Sweetest little pets! I love the weep-weep-weep-gimme-treats song.

Hi Granny! I've been checking in, but haven't had much to say. My back has been giving me fits, so I don't want to post and be cranky. I think it's great your daughter's family is staying with you again. I know it must be hard, but can't imagine what they'd do without you. Having a GS to sit with you and watch adorable guinea pig videos is a bonus.

How does your son like having all those little rambunctious cousins around?

I hope your Serama hen hatches those eggs. The new chicks are impossibly small and so cute! 5 of them will fit in your hand. Well, at least in my hand, which is rather large. Like a man's.

I culled my poor Leghorn last week. Pretty sure she had internal laying troubles. The distance between her legs was growing wider and wider. She had no meat on her bones, but had a very heavy backside. She was heavier than when she was in prime laying condition. She was getting around okay and still eating, but the final straw was her having mites. Kinder to cut things short rather than let her continue.

Hope your foot feels better soon. Sounds like you are going to need some sort of brace to give it some stability. Better that than enduring so much pain.

Somebody in the neighborhood is shooting. We haven't had that in a long time. I don't mind so much if I know who it is. Some people I wouldn't even trust with a slingshot! We live nestled at the base of a curving ridge and the sounds echo all around, big roaring booms, like thunder. Must be a big gun. At least it's not the scary young man from 10 yrs ago. Luckily for us, he and his arsenal have moved on.

I have 8 broodies now! Not getting very many eggs. The broody-busting cages aren't working this time. Anyone have other ideas to break the broody cycle? Maybe a long car ride? Couple of years ago, I got a very broody Silkie from a lady who lives about 2 hours away. We put her in a comfy nest box covered with towels for darkness to keep her calm and quiet, hoping she would be broody when I got her home so she could hatch Serama eggs. No deal. Was 6 months before she went broody again! Now I don't need any because my tiny little rooster is shooting blanks. Maybe it's time for a road trip! Load up the broody-mobile and head for the ocean! Never have seen chickens at the beach. Too cold for surfing here, but maybe they'd like to go kayaking.
