Hi Granny girl, I miss you too when I haven't gotten on in a bit. Very busy time for me right now. Just got the Silkie coop completed yesterday, trying to get ready for putting in the garden. Granddaughter had soccer last night so headed out to her game, hubbies B-day tomorrow and a funeral for one of our friends. Have had to deal with way more than I was hoping for with momma & baby chicks. Have lost 4 so far. Yesterday I was furious with the broody momma. She took the littles outside Sunday for a outing. They stayed out all afternoon and into early evening. About 6pm it started to get cloudy and was acting like a storm might be coming in. So hubby & I tried to get her & the young ones in before it rained. They weren't having any of that. Each time we would get some babies in and go grab more, the others would come back out of the coop. Eventually it started to pour and as I had suspected momma freaked out, jumped up the side of the ramp and ran into the coop leaving the 14 little ones to fend for themselves. We got them all in safely,I turned on the red light to get them warm & to keep them warm thru the night. They were all with momma when I shut the coop down for the night. When I headed out to the coop yesterday morning I was greeted with my one & only pure Silk dead by the door. I was so sad, I have struggled majorly to get Silkies to hatch in the first place. I got 2 pures & one mix out of last weeks hatch. I had already promised my niece 2, so she ended up with the other pure & the silkie mix. Now I'm back to square one grr.... Keeping my fingers crossed that the 3 pure Silkie eggs I got from the breeder will hatchout in 2 1/2 weeks.

I hope your ankle gets to feeling better granny so you can check on your babies. I don't remember who posted yesterday about it, but I agree you would be much more stable with that ankle if you wore a brace on it 24/7 when your up and moving. Take it off for the nights, set it on your night stand and then put it back on in the a.m. before you even get out of bed.
I'm sorry that mobility is keeping you from going and doing the things you love :hugs

computer acting up bad. Enola says to tell everyone she will /should be back tomorrow. she is fine. thank you to everyone for posting.

SIL went through my computer again.

I have very large hands as well. sixe 11 ring finger and i am ashamed to tell the shoe. The Dr. did give me the shorter boot and when i put it on today sil commented on how i was walking better with it on. and my daughter said she will look for another that i can wear to the coop. It hurts my back muscles ut i guess i can/will get used to it. better then wheel chair. Seramas moved to a coop and run except for those sitting and a few babies. It will be better this way. until i post them anyway. sorry about yr babies Lisa. keeping fingers crossed for ALL the chicks due to hatch soon. Camping, your baby looks like my egyptions .

I hope your resting granny girl, glad to hear that you can walk a bit better with the boot on. Thanks for caring about my little blue silkie. Just candled the 3 silkie eggs in the incubator. 2/3 are showing veining, but its only day 5 so hopefully the 3rd one is just running a bit behind. I'm praying that at least 1 will hatch. The silkies have been my Seramas. I have had such horrible luck hatching them. Rest well granny, Hubby's b-day tomorrow & a funeral for a friend the passed from cancer. Going to get to bed earlier so I can get moving early tomorrow, night all

Well I candled getting ready for lockdown, and had another rotten egg. AND to my GREAT SURPRISE there were 5-6 internal pips! :celebrate

Not counting my chickens, or anything, but I am pretty surprised to see internal pips this early.

So, what makes an egg smell bad? They are from my own backyard and no older than about 10 days when set. I'm not sure why they get smelly. I've lost 9 out of the 61, and at least 7-8 of those smelled.

camping, I'm no expert, but I wonder if bacteria is getting in those eggs and making them smell. Could be really porous shells or hairline cracks?
Good luck on the rest of the hatch!

sorry about your friend Lisa.

tell the ol man happy birthday. rotted eggs, EEEWWww! are they very dirty? can also be a cause besides what wishing said. After this batch is done make sure to disinfect your incubator and give it some sunshine for a few hrs.
