ok, this has nothing to do with chickens except for the fact i was outside locking them up. i came back inside and my 80 yr. old mother is sitting there with a funny look on her face. it took me a min. to realize she is watching naked and afraid. she keeps tilting her head one way then the other and finally she says, "why is the picture all blurry?"

i said to her, "i dont know but isnt the amazon a beautiful place?"

the old hen that the dog tore up is healed very nicely physically , mentally she is a mess !! she will not come out of the barn, she is pooping on the table saw and every other tool in there she can find. i keep taking her to her flock and she beats me back to the barn. i was thinking she remembers the attack and is afraid to be over there. i took her to them last night after roost time and started to lock her with the others when i discovered i was thinking too hard. it has nothing to do with the attack, its her mate! he has REALLY missed her and she wants nothing to do with him. so now i have a 5-6 yr. old hen that dont lay, half bald, pooping on everything, i worked to save and no where to put her. she wont free range, just hides in the barn all day and night. she was eating the scraps that fell from the brooders but i gave up and gave her food and water in there last night. she is sleeping in the cat bed, with the cat. he is the one i put in the coop when i see mice so that part doesnt surprise me too much. i guess i will just buy some tarps.

woohooo!!!! i had 4 eggs under 2 hens, 1 egg under another and one i didnt know how many. one hatched yesterday morn. and i have been spraying the hens with warm water since yesterday. i know thats why they werent hatching. i got tired of all that mess and set my bator up. i started with the mystery nest. 9 eggs , oh boy. ok, thats the worst of it. next nest one right? nope 9 again. anyway when i got done collecting i had 25 eggs.

i am sorry/glad to say only the 3 in the first nest were alive. 2 are pipping already since i put them in the bator and upped the humidity. it was 15 degrees last night. all of my brooders are full. i am considering myself lucky today. i need to stay on top of the eggs but bantams are so sneaky !! one problem, there is a big dog igloo i cant reach and a missing hen. its under the ladder that is attached to the roosts.8ft. long

well crap!!! the eggs i brought in today had piped and nothing else i opened one a bit and saw it was dead so i did an eggtopsy and its membrane was completely clear, no yolk sack at all, wasnt even attached by the cord so it had struggled for a while to get out. i knew it needed humidity, i just waited too long. i piped 2 more, one dead one struggling. i have helped it up to the cord and it is just laying there but alive. the last egg from a different hen is a mystery to me. i have never candled an egg that looks like it does. almost looks like two but not. i dont believe it to be ready if it is alive. i will candle again tonight when its good and dark. went out to close them up and just that fast i have a hen sitting 5 eggs. since it just did that today, i took them all away. i blame it all on mother nature !

Granny, the hen that was attacked may stay traumatized for several weeks. After an attack, it can take them a long time to get over things like this. Even a couple months. So don't rush her. She will come around when she is ready. It will help to get her out of her area, but not too far from comfort. That sort of things sticks with them for some time to come.
