I did not know that thanks ! oh and stalk away, I already checked yours out a long time ago. LOL

Oh me, oh my.......went to Rural King today to pick up some here's and there's and was quite puzzled to see the chick tubs still out, but figured they were just not going to put them up since they have the room to leave them where they were, until I noticed that two of them had lights on.......what do you know, RK has chicks! The "chick guy" happened to be walking past so I made comment to him about being surprised they had chicks so late in the year and he says, "Well, right now they're talking about just keeping them in the store year round"..........oh no, now DH won't just ground me from Feb-May, he'll ground me from Rural King FOREVER!!!!!!

I was *this* close to picking up "just a few" (after all, Ms. Broody Brahma is STILL broody - this would give her a reason to get off the nest finally) but they were just two bins of "hatchery choice pullets" and the best I could make out were that they were some form of red chick, I'd have jumped at the chance if I had been positive they were sex links, plus DH was giving me the stink eye. Next time I'm going to stand firm on telling him he should just stay home, he ruins all my fun, lol.

Isn't it funny how you get these mental images of what someone looks like - and then you see them and you weren't close at all???? Agree, though, that's a great picture!

Holy wow - remind us not to make Yorkshire angry!!

Bet it was gory too. I have heard its one of the hardest jobs there is.

The work was very tedious. All of the workers stand in one place and you do the same procedure to a few thousand chickens every day. The same movement over and over and over......

The job I did was removing the breast meat and tenders from the rib cage. The whole breast came by me on a shackle. I reached up grabbed it, stuck it on a cone shaped thingy that was in front of me on a stand. I ripped the breast meat off the rib cage and the. I made two little cuts at the top of the 'tenders' and ripped them off. The tenders and breast meat went on a belt that carried it away to be packaged. The rib cages went into a big stainless steel tub that ws on wheels so it could be rolled away when it got full.

One day a man tried to duck under the line of shackles and got caught by his overall straps. He was screamng and trying to get off of the shackle when he got lifted off of the floor and started coming toward my work station, just dangling on the shackle, unable to do anything about it. As he went past me I reached out grabbed his strap and cut him loose with my knife. If I had left my station when I should have a would have been seriously injured, maybe even killed.......

At the end of every shift, we would have to spray down our plastic apron with soapy water to get all of the grease and slime off of it, then someone hosed down the front of us to get the soap off. We had to wear hair nets, men with beards had to wear beard nets. We also wore liners inside our rubber gloves to keep fingers from freezing and rubber boots with two pair of socks, and light weight long johns, top and bottom all year.

Definitely not my favorite job in my varied careers. My Ex still works there. Probably going on 35 years now.......
