Sad thing about pits is they're great dogs, but people don't know how to take care of them. There are tons of other breeds that bite much more frequently, but when a pit bites, they do such damage.

thats me, I just dont know how. the ankle bitters are the worst I have heard.

TSC has a good brand, 4 health. No wheat, corn, or soy. I can't remember how much it is. I've never liked science diet. We use Purina one also and like it. I think it's one step above (price wise) the regular Purina dog chow.

We feed 4-Health and really like it......even with Ziva's sensitive system it has been great. They recently expanded their protein selections to and our bunches' favorite are the duck and the pork based kibble. I think we pay like $22-24 for the medium bag (around 16 pounds). Their "stew" canned stuff is pretty good too according to the dogs - they each get a smidge on their "dinner" kibble every night, but the kibble is good enough they are just as excited about breakfast, which is kibble only.

There's a huge list of breeds we agreed not to have: pits, rotts, dobermans, gsd, to name a few. Basically anything that looks intimidating. No one ever told us this, but we decided years ago. Would y'all drop off your kids at a place with rotts or dobies roaming around? Because I wouldn't. Husband doesn't even want mixed breed dogs, which I don't agree with. He always wants something that parents can recognize as a friendly breed. Current pup is mixed, but most people assume she's a chocolate lab.

The ridgebacks were very quiet. No howling that I remember and rarely any barking. When they did bark, it got our attention! Originally bred for hunting lions in southern Africa, so not sure of the origins.

I would be no more or less inclined to drop my kids off there than if they had any other breed of dog. I am big on meeting the dogs in question so that I can evaluate their temperament myself if the kids are going to be around them (that was when they were smaller, now that they are bigger, they know now to evaluate the sitaution/dog and respond accordingly). I, personally, don't buy into the breed generalizations and prefer to get a feel for the individual dog and, more importantly, the people who have been responsible for the dog's training and daily care so as to get an idea of what the likelyhood of negative situations arising will be.

shoot , I never got a chance to drop mine anywhere. I have seen the times I would of left them with a mutt just to get a break ! hahaa

That's so good. I try to be the same, personally. Professionally it's hard when there are 30-80 kids showing up around the same time. Jewel is basically our ambassador because she meets people before we do. Our last dog, Gunner, was a big old floppy lab and he was just the very best of the best camp dog. Jewel has room for improvement. I joke that she's introverted, but it's basically true. She doesn't crave attention until she gets to know someone pretty well. But that also meant that as a puppy she wasn't jumping on kids or knocking them over. And when she feels overwhelmed, she just goes home. (We live on the campgrounds.)

Anyway, sorry to ramble. Actually when I took her to all the shops over the weekend she had a great time and let all the strangers touch her, even the rowdy kids in the park. And then we both slept about two days. Haha, introverts.

Addendum: Jewel is only two. Gunner was 8 when he ran off. This was Jewel's first real summer out (first two were just supervised visits), because we wanted the worst of puppyhood behind us. I'm pretty sure that by next year she'll be perfect.
