We had a shepard while I was in grade school.. She did bite 1 neighbor hood kid but in her defense she had just given birth to 13 puppies that day. To make the B(female dog) of her mother happy Heidi was chained, and put in a fenced in run had to be both. She started to go slightly nuts Kileed 4 of her pups so I got to hand raise the other 9. We found a home for her (mp from the local base) the night he came to pick her up a different neighbor informed us that kids from town were coming out and poking her with sticks through the fence, no wonder she went a little "off". The man who took her called about 6 month after he got Heidi and said that she was doing great nd had gone through both obienience training and basic military police training. His works "what a great dog thank you so very much"

I've had probably a hundred dogs through rescuing, fostering, adopting, and buying from breeders. The only time I was bitten was by a westie when I was about 7. DD has been bitten by a Pom and a beagle, both dogs of family members and neither time her fault. She was in my line of sight each time. DS was bitten recently by our Jewel, but that was an accident. DD was throwing a rope toy, and DS has thin stringy arms. I didn't see it happen, but I'm pretty sure it was an honest mistake. Puppies are boisterous. And I think she felt bad, because she kept sneaking over to give him kisses.

whole family is sitting at the table watching the door. hahaa ol mare, do you have problems with tangles in Jethros hair ? I am having a hard time trying to get the knots out

If we slack on brushing, yes he will get matted - most of the time we keep him in a nice, short cut -- during times when I let him grow out I just make a point to brush him out really good at least twice a week (more often than not he gets a little brushing every night while he and I watch some t.v. together, lol). Luckily DD and I are both pretty handy with a set of clippers, so we just give both boys haircuts at home vs. paying a groomer (dogs - though I also do DS's hair, wouldn't touch DH's cut for all the money in the world - he's still VERY particular about keeping a good regulation haircut, not about to screw it up).
For bad matts on a dog when shaving is not really an option I love show sheen (horse product) -- it's fabulous for working through and releasing some pretty gnarly tangles.

I agree the larger breeds seem for the most part to be gentler , I think the smaller ones tend to be more nervous and high strung, due to them being breed for size first. Personally I don't consider it a dog if it weighs less then about 20 lbs.
