Good crispy Sunday morning everyone! 
A bit too chilly to let the girls out of the coop yet, they haven't had time to adjust to 15o F.  I also can't figure out if the frost is that thick or we got a bit of snow overnight.  The folks to our north in the U.P got a good solid dumping on overnight.  First one like that they've seen this early since 2001.   Anyway, I get a bit of time this morning to just relax with my coffee and catch up with you all.  Sounds like a bit of a party last night, eh?

It can get a bit old around February as you stare at all the white where the gardens and field are supposed to be. Spring doesn't normally truly arrive til mid May and you can still get snow then but with this being a El Nino winter, who knows? The last one we saw true spring in April!!! It still is a nice place to live and I don't mind the cold, at least as long we don't have too many -35o nights and the power stays on. We are getting a bit old for all the shoveling tho. I hate to think about the day we can't do it anymore.

So Red, now that I caught up. I had so many comments and cheers I wanted to share but just couldn't. I'm past goin today. I wanted to mention your tractor idea. It sounded great! I wanted to mention though, and anybody else feel free to correct me: The suggested dimensions: For LF coop, the minimum, like someone posted is 4 sq ft. That's a 2X2 square. For the run, it's a 5X5 square per bird. 2 ft per bird for roost.
For the smaller birds, you can pack them in tighter.
Heat:LF have a larger body mass and I can't imagine them needing heat in your climate. The little birds, IMHO, if they're not densely feathered, if they don't have plenty of coop-mates to cuddle with, if the temp drops suddenly, I personally would supply a heat source. I'm not a fan of lamps. A pig mat on a wall, A Lectro-mat, an oil heater for a large coop. Just sayin.

i agree mutt ..i don't use heat unless is really cold for the bantams..

Great idea.  Saves you from having to buy lumber for the uprights.  Sounds like a neat project.   Ask Pearl to take pictures please. 



I don't have quail, but I've got Serama that lay quail sized eggs.  They are fun to hard boil, bite sized.  I tried making tiny deviled eggs once, but it was mostly a failure.  The yolks are really large, so about half of the whites ended up being too thin to hold the eggy goodness.  Still fun, though.  My MIL said Oh, too much work! so I know she was impressed.
What kind of quail are you thinking of getting?



You shouldn't have to put a light on them in the 30s if they are dry and protected from drafts.  My bantams snuggle up on the roosts together, but we rarely get below 30 either. 

Coturnix. I hear they are a lot friendlier then buttons. I have been looking at silver coturnix(just imported to the US in the past couple years)... I always want to start out with something expensive.

hi all, went to a yard sale and for $10. we filled the van up. had to come home and unload before i could go to the grocery. LOL  scored a work bench with 2 built in electric plugs, a yard cart, 2x3ft plexiglass, spray paint, a lock box with the key, about 20 readers digest from the 70s, a space heater for DD, thats all I remember . good haul. LOL  pharmacist  gave /sold me a thumb support/wrist splint and motrin. not helping much . she told me to take them one hr. after my pain pills to help with the swelling.  we went to eat and I pigged out. Captian Ds. fish place.

That is a lot of stuff for $10! Hope your hand gets better.

I am the one with quail. I have coturnix and california. I am going to put some eggs in the incubator.

I hope everyone who isn't feeling well gets well soon. We all know how impatient the hens are to be fed.

It's cold here too. Last winter, even when it was super cold, I never used a heat source.

i lived in michigan a long time..only seasons were cold winters and hot summers..it done a job on my sinus',,but we did like it there..my oldest daughter stayed after i moved home..but now she is here..i'm so glad..

Going to get four baby chicks. Question, I started working with safeguard. I'm suppose to do it again Wednesday for the last time. Well my Cochin decided this morning would be a good time to go broody I think. Do I worm the rest a get her later or do I fight with her now?
