WELL... I'm stacked pretty high right now. No room for a proper quarantine. My coop is just for sleeping, run is just for eating, and the rest of the yard for free ranging. Right beside the coop is the ugly tractor, which is where I put the new babies. Near the back is the cute tractor, which is where I put the big girls. So basically playpen method, but large scale.

:celebrate I want a chair between them all to sit and watch. The RR's looked really nice! The littles are pure RIR too?

Three (2 pullets 1 roo) are pure RIR. Four are RIR/amerecauna mixed. All are the offspring of the four hens. The elderly Amerecauna is solid black and her name is Georgette. :love

We have weather swings here sometimes 40 degrees in one direction or another. Wake up and it's 40 and by afternoon it's 80. ... The weird ones are in the middle of the day and it's 90 then you leave work and it's 60. I've been swimming on xmas here!

I heard on the radio today that they put up the giant Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center today. It was a record 75º in NYC!
Not very Christmas-ey! (They won't light it until Dec 2nd)

Thank you, oh wise one!

I don't think breeding is in my future (too hard to part with pups, so I'd end up with waaaay oto many dogs) so a dog of either sex would be rendered reproductively neutral. (How's that, Twist? Instead of saying fixed. ) In my experience, the females were more intense, but also smarter in a way, a better companion. The last two females I've had (not RRs), raised as single dogs by me, seemed to challenge the boundaries every so often. I realized I want a dog that is going to be a bit more laid back. I have experience, and know what to do, but I don't want to face constant challenges. I will study the Volhard lesson well. And I will get a puppy without having to work or raise kids, so no distractions.

Now, do you have any advice on how to break this plan to my husband?

It will be a few years at least. Belle has too much trouble walking with her bad knee to deal with a puppy.
Awe, ty. Why wait? Would Belle snark at a pup and get after it? If she won't, best to wait.I love to have the old maids teach them the ropes though. A softer male form a litter can be easier than a female. I judge by the dog. Me thinks you should go get one immediately since I can't! At least contact the breeder of the wonderful dog you met and have a look see! I'm here to enable!!!
Oh. The DH...best I can do there is give advice from my grandmother passed down to me. You must tell your DH everything you think he NEEDS to know. Suprise honey! Look what I got! Or, just tell him. Bucket list. I'm going to do this.

We're having crazy weather like that too ..making every one sick

I raised 2 massive Orpington juvies with my tiny Seramas. Orpingtons grew up respecting their elders. They could have inflicted serious damage if they wanted.

Figgy Pudding (Orp), in the back, with the much smaller members of her flock.

Lola is a small Marans, and she got on well with the littles.

Mo the tiny rooster compared to Buster Posey, who was not fully grown yet. I did eventually move the large birds in with my big girl layer flock.
so pretty! See Red?
