He would need a pure bred hen to sell purebred chicks.

Camping, dedicated breeders don't sell their sub standard chicks because they are trying to keep quality and prices higher.

Most breeds were excepted by APA in one color. Breeders decided they wanted other colors, bred chickens in that color and petitioned APA to accept those colors, too.

Getting breeds and different colored varieties accepted by APA is a long arduous road. The breeders working on the new breed or color variety have to be members of APA. Someone has to write the SOP for the breed, APA does not do this. The breed must be represented at APA sanctioned shows for a minimum of 5 years (I think). After this time, APA decides whether the proposed SOP is acceptable. And finally the breed or color variety has to breed true to meet qualifications for APA.

Unaccepted color varieties of accepted breeds are referred to as "project" colors.

I hope all of this made sense.

YES!! :bow Believe it or not, that's what I was trying to say. :lau

I know that papabrooder sells his project birds. I'm not going to be the person storming those beaches, but I will cheer on others who do.

I wanted so badly to help with the Cream Legbars. But, I wasn't good enough for them..... I had to join the Legbar Club and the APA. I just wanted to breed them. If I had gotten lucky enough to get a show quality one I would have GIVEN it to someone to show. Well, I couldn't do that, the chicken had to be shown by the breeder. Bull shIit, lots of breeders were showing chickens they bought from the importer of the breeder. Then they changed the SOP they were writing so much that my rooster no longer fit the SOP. Then the members started arguing over the proposed color change. Then they decided the chicken's minimum weight needed to be larger. So, now my rooster was the wrong color AND too small. When spring came around and the new generation of hens started laying eggs that were greener than blue, they decided to accept green as an acceptable egg color. I got upset and complained because the breed was advertised as being a BLUE egg layer and that was the reason they were imported.

When someone pm'd me and said maybe I should choose another breed since I was so disappointed with them, I went to the hen house, cut off all of their ID bands and told them they were normal chickens now and I still loved them.

The I got on my computer and pm'd her back and told her I would keep the breed since I wasn't upset with the breed, I was upset with the idiots involved with the breed. Never heard from them again.....

FWIW - I have no issue with those who take pride in what they do (eg in breeding birds of a certain quality) - it is the attitude expressed by some that I take issue with.
