Any ideas why 5 of my 10 girls have bloody vents? I assume it is from pecking, but it started out of no where and now I have them all separated. Ideas for prevention? Warning graphic images below.

  2. Any changes in the housing? Are they cramped for space? What do YOU think is at the root of it?

Could something be biting them while they roost at night?

I honestly don’t know, these girls have been together since October, no issues before. Idk if they are moody because the run has been wet due to the rain we have been getting. We also have not been letting them free roam this winter because they run into the streets, and last summer we lost half our flock to a fox. My run is 6ft by 6ft and we have a manufactured coop that recommends up to 10 birds and we haven’t surpassed that. I am at a loss.

I have heard if rats get in they can cause damage to roosting chickens. I would think it would be more like their feet, just guessing here. Hopefully someone who has seen this before will show up and we will all learn something. :pop

Originally it was one bird and I thought something tried to grab her, then I found the male wounds on others and assumes it had to be pecking... I just don’t know why.

  8. Oh... Manufactured coop that states it holds up to 10
I am guessing they are cramped for space. The coops you buy are notorious for overstating the number of birds they can hold. How big is it in feet by feet?

That’s the coop, we built the run

  10. Well the good news is now we know the problem is they are cramped up. You need to build something bigger.

    Good luck
