Half Shell Hatch-A-Long! (Caution, unsuccessful, please read whole thread before attempting)

Awesome, thank you so much!!! So should I use the TP tubes then? These eggs are pretty big.
If you are not going to use the turner then the tubes might be the way to try.

I'd grab a couple of other eggs that are the same size and see how well they hold the eggs in the position that you want. I found the angled cut tubes allowed for better egg angles, but once you open the tops you may want less angle, thus a straight cut tube.
I did much playing around with things using eggs not intended for the hatch so I wasn't jostling the important eggs around.

I wasn’t getting notifications again. :(

I take the bigger top tray out of my janoel and use the hatching thing the whole time, and I took the turner rod out completely so it’s not hitting any eggs. Then a normal carton bottom fits well enough. Of course, then the temp gets kind of screwy so I just have one of the dividers with a thermometer probe attached to it and taped to the walls. xD I don’t even look at the numbers on the display anymore, since that thing seems to do what it wants whenever it feels like it. Lol.

I don’t have any experience with any other incubators other than my homemade styrofoam one, but I like yours, and @SnapdragonQ ‘s setup is awesome with the tubes. 👍

love how we all have these things we’ve tried and can pass along our experiences on them to everyone here. :)

Yeah, I'm not using the turner. I'll go with straight tp tubes then. I'll get some non-hatching eggs and play with those. Do you have any empty incubators? You could try with me... lol.

Aw, I'm sorry! I've been having a lot of trouble with not getting notifications too. I've never incubated upright really. The janoel is an interesting incubator...lol. It does seem to have a mind of it's own. It does really well once it's broken in I think. I've had some 100% hatches in it, and I even had a really good couple months with it where I had great hatches. It was just too small for me though, and I felt like it wasn't reliable enough for what I wanted. Thus, I got the NR. The janoel is a great incubator though, just takes some figuring out. The NR was only $40 more than the janoel, and I think it was a great upgrade. Did your quail eggs come yet? I'm excited to try this with you, we can cross the uncharted territory together. Lol.
If anyone else is up for an experiment I'd love for you to try too!

Ok, my two eggs are developing! Day 3 today.

These little things never fail to amaze me. Yesterday nothing was visible, and today, voila! I have an egg carton too. I'm just going to use half of the carton it think. Only use 2 slots and the other slots can stabilize it. @SnapdragonQ since you have an NR, and you've hatched upright, how do I go about this? Do I need to do a lot of air holes in the carton? How much do I need to tip them? There's enough room for a carton, right?
Are you doing a half shell? Or is it going to be full shelled?

@FortCluck what do you think I should have the humidity at? Should it be high? 60s?
What was it last time?

I always do 30s till day 18 then I go to maybe 40. When I do assists that I have to crack open days before hatch, I usually bring it up to 50 just so the membrane isn’t drying out like crazy with the ointment on it.

I think it was around 45. I just thought since they'll be open the whole time maybe it should be higher? I don't want to have to use coconut oil the whole time, unless I really have to.

All good!
The selection was very limited for incubators here. Lol, as it is I spent more than it’s worth on the second one but since I already had one, I had a feel for how it behaved so it was ok. xD I’m not bothering with the turner at all and I don’t look at the thermostat, but I’ve got thermo/hygrometers for both and I think I’ve found the sweet spot for them now. I would love an NR but for me to order one in it would’ve cost me almost $500! So nope 🤪 haha.
Quail eggs should arrive tomorrow, and the one I’ll be attempting this with is going to be incubated intact for the first 3 days, as I read in the study I’m going off of. Then I’ll crack the sucker into my contraption and see what happens from there! Haha.
Yesss the more the merrier! :wee
