Halloween Hatch-A-Long 2017

Ok you guys. I need help!!
I'm all in a fizz about the temp on uglybator. Here's what I got so far. Thermometers were calibrated using the slush method. Here is what I have:
Aquarium Thermometer: lowest marked temp is 32 but the thermometer continues for another inch down, highest marked temp is 150 and that is very near the end of the thermometer (see picture). Slush calibration had it as near to perfect as I could tell. Currently reads just under 100F.

Meat Thermometer: low is 0 high is 220. I have it inserted into a water bottle through a hole in the lid. It reads ~101F Slush calibrated, but boil calibration didn't match up. Went with slush.

Oral Fever Thermometers: I have two. I did not calibrate. I put a small cup of water covered in plastic wrap into the bator (see picture, it's the metal shotglass near bulb). After 2 hours I stuck the thermometer in and turned it on. Did this with two. They read 100.3 and 100.4F respectively.

Digital Thermometer/Hydrometer:
Came with my brinsea, I've used it in a lot of hatches. I love the small compact size. It's gotten humid a lot, and last time when I was calibrating it the bag was compromised and it got wet, however it was dried quickly and appeared to work. It calibrated 32.4 using slush. When place on top of the shot glass in uglybator it said the temp was 103.2F! (103.6)

Darn! Almost wish I'd waited to buy the eggs I have hatching out this week. They're still cute, though...Coturnix Quail and Ayam Cemanis. The AC's just started pipping last night. The quail are about 5 days old (at least that means they're all close to the same size now...), and they run too fast to get good pictures of them.

Do I get brownie points for the most Halloween-ish chicks at least?View attachment 1159234 View attachment 1159233

Good luck, of course they count!

So you actually got me to thinking about whether my digital therm. was actually acting wonky or if my thermometers are reading inaccurate because of the type they are. I know the slush calibration is at the very bottom of the aquarium thermometers range and 100 is close-ish to the top. That probably could cause an accuracy problem. I also tried to calibrate the meat thermometer using both the slush method AND the boiling method, but got two different calibrations. Now I'm a bit worried....haaaa. Might go look at the digital again. It is a incubation specific one that came with my brinsea. Haaaa...I hope I didn't ruin the eggs I just set. I know new eggs are more susceptible to too hot temps. :(:(:(:(:(:(

@mlm Mike the move went well! Walked down the street two block to the school. Incubator in a bag, eggs in a Styrofoam egg carton wrapped in a towel were carried by my 6yo. Everything was set up and looks great.

Glad the move went well.

I've used the ice water method and aim at having my "actual" temps about 100 as a failsafe in case the testing is a bit off. I use a couple aquarium thermometers and a couple regular "purchased at the hardware store" type thermometer/hygrometer combinations. I use wafer thermostats so once I have it set...I leave it where it is and don't have to move it.

I calibrated very quickly and must have rushed things and the temps said I needed to change the setting on the wafer. Big mistake...it was too cool and I lost the hatch except for one. And this was this spring after hatching for 1.5 years...lol. I recalibrated and set the wafer back to where it was and everything's been golden.

I have regular digital thermometers...but I never put much stock in them. I would think the medical thermometers "should" be on point. However, I've never tried that.;)

Here's a pretty good pic of my assortment of thermometers. You can see that digital one is way off. There's another aquarium thermometer in the back bottom corner that you can't see. I use them at different levels because I stack my bator like this, sometimes more. It's easier if there's just 1-2 levels of eggs. I really like the white hardware ones...they take up a lot of room, but they register change right away. :clap
