Halloween/Thanksgiving Hatch-a-Long 2019

Welp, my four hatched a day late. Three of them hatched, anyway, and I had to break one out of the shell. I do not like that, makes me wonder if I'm running too dry or what. They didn't pip right either, one pipped in the small end and three pipped in the middle. They were in the auto turner and it was working. I just don't know what's going on with these eggs.

The small ones like this I only use for 2--3 chicks, and only for the first few days. Or, if they're quail, longer. I have larger ones.
These chicks were only in here while their regular brooder got cleaned.

Ahh okay. That makes sense then!!

Yea buddy. I use tanks too. 2 40 gals regularly are grow outs on my back porch. No breeze no lights. I have a 20 tall that i use for day olds indoors if i have to seperate bigger from little. Or if the hatch is too small to use the mega brooder.

That makes sense!! Didn’t realize it was possible.

I guess quail are a lot smaller. You mostly use those for quail right? Or all chicks?

I just know when I had a plastic tote it seemed small after like a week ha but then I also used MHP which also took up probably like a quarter or half plus the long feeder and a waterer so that’s probably why. That stuff takes up a lot of space. I only had 5 though.

Whatcha use for brooders?
Mine's a large guinea pig cage with a deep (5") tray. My little Brinsea brooder plate fits inside it perfectly, taking up about a third of the floor, but providing perch space as the chicks get taller. It works out pretty well for a half dozen or so of my tiny bantams, but my Kindergarten Dropouts (JG & NHR) outgrew it almost overnight!

Banty, I have not used a house bulb in a long time. The bulb is hot, but not throwing heat. Does it take a few hours?
For a brooder? Incubator? Depends on the wattage, the <40 bulbs do jack for heating unless in an enclosed space. The bulbs I use don't take more than a few minutes to start heating up the area.
