Hamburg thread!

Thanks! Most of the time he is. When he is tired, he will cuddle up right under your neck. Lately he has been a little aggressive because we also have a house duck, and because he isnt wearing his diaper. Other than that, he is the sweetest boy!

You're making me miss my old Orpington rooster. He was the same way.

I love all roosters. If it was possible, I would have a lot more! Back in January we had to take in the neighbors rooster because he got frostbite. He is back with them now but I hope he comes back because he let me give him a bath and hold him.

I had some problems with frostbite too not too far back. I never thought to give them a warm bath; that's a good idea. I'll have to remember that.

Do you have any tips for keeping the coop warm? I had to move my more affected chickens into the garage last winter because of the frostbite, and it was a real hassle. I live in Michigan, so it gets pretty cold here too.

Thank goodness I didn't have any chickens this winter - I don't know what I would've done. Poor things.

Also Vitamin E oil really helps. I heard that if you put Vaseline on the comb and wattles before the frostbite, it will help.

No, sorry. Finn is my only chicken, but we might be getting some this year. We do have outside ducks, but they have down feathers.

My tip:

Most important is a WIDE perch (about 4 inches) then,

Fluffy chickens, good size chickens, and tiny or no combs and wattles.

So I just got some Silver Pencilled Hamburgs, (at least I think they are, I got them at tractor supply) and I was wondering what you can tell me about the breed. I have chickens and I've been raising them for years, but I had never even heard of these. So now I would like to know what people with personal experience with the breed have to say about them. For example temperament, egg color, how broody they are.

White eggs, not broody, and a bit flighty kinda like leghorns.



But that is just from what I have read, my hamburgs are showing up next week.

Finn is the calmest, sweetest baby I know, but that's cause I rasied him from a baby.

Only 6 more days until his testing, so I will ask someone there what they think. I know 100% that he is a bantam.

Silver Spangled Hamburgs are one of my favorite breeds. I also keep Buckeyes and they are as different as night and day. They don't even flock together. I teasingly call them "Silver Spangled Nutjobs" because they are so much flightier than the Buckeyes. They are also some of the prettiest chickens I've seen. If the SPs are anything like my SSs, you will enjoy them for their zippy personality and reliable egg laying.
