I totally agree. I always tell people it is just like buying a puppy from a pet store instead of rescuing a dog from a shelter. So rescue a hen (or rooster), don't buy or hatch chicks. It frustrates me when people buy instead of rescue.. I will admit that I bought 6 chicks (first chickens) from a feed store, though that was before I knew you could rescue battery hens. Now I would never do that again! I also had a hen who hatched 10 chicks, before I knew you could rescue battery hens. Then after I knew you could rescue hens, my hen was sneaky and hatched 3 eggs without me knowing for several days. For several days I was in tears too, I thought I coyote killed her.. But, now I would never get chicks, I would rescue battery hens - or if someone locally was killing there hens for a reason like they aren't laying, I would be happy to take them. For those of you looking to rescue hens, I can't imagine there is a shortage of those in need of new good homes. Every week it seems, someone is asking me to take their hens. Either they're moving to Florida or the hens aren't laying much if at all or they're tired of them or they're too expensive......... whatever...........basically they just don't want them anymore. Same old story whether it's cats, dogs, hamsters, bunnies and now hens.....since backyard flocks have become so popular. I wish everyone would rescue hens rather than (or at least in addition to) buying and raising more chicks. (I know I'm going to get s*** for saying this, but raising more chicks to me is like raising more kittens and puppies when there are millions dying in shelters.)
I think so..I didn't realize they were the Turlock rescue organization. That was the video from theawesomechick wasn't it?
Yeah. I watched the 54 minute documentary - so sad.Yes, it is. That was heartbreaking. If you check out Animal Place's website, they talk a lot about the 4000 hen rescue.
