Hello! My husband noticed that one of our Barred Rock's feathers looked funny so we checked her tonight after she got on the roost. At the base of her neck, between her shoulders, is a golf ball sized hard lump. she was out all day in the yard with the other girls and seems to be fine. It's kind-of tumory looking. The skin is scabby/scaly looking. Any ideas?

She seems to be OK today too, just walked right out with everybody else when I opened the coop, but the lump is still there. Don't know if I should be concerned or not. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

OK... trying to put this out here again hoping for advice. Our girl with the lump was all bloody this morning. Don't know if it was her or one if our others that got to her, but it didn't look good when I let them out. Show's still showing no behavioral changes, still laying, eating, scratching with the rest, but we did separate her & did take her to a vet. He offered to remove it, but admitted he was not familiar with chickens, had no clue what it was & did not guarantee survival. He did clean it & send us home with cleanser & ointment. She's quit pecking at it & is just trying to clean her feathers, but YIKES! Anybody?

Hi, one of my pullets has a scaly looking lump on her back, and I found your posting, wonder how it turned out with your girl?

Hoping for good news, obviously! Thanks!

Welcome to BYC. Pictures always help to identify what is wrong. What part of the back is affected?

Unfortunately, we never did find out.
The vet couldn't identify it either, and referred us to a bird specialist an hour away. Sorry to say, that was not worth it for us. Our vet did give us some She did give us some chlorhex to clean it and some silver sulfadiazine to coat it. Our trouble ended up being her.
She went for about 3 months with it, with no apparent trouble and then started pecking at it. Then the others did too...
Our gal was about 2...Hope you can find a solution!

Sorry I couldn't produce a useful photo of my RIR pullet's growth until she'd died. The lump on her left hip didn't seem to be bothering her, until a couple of weeks ago I noticed she was favoring her right leg. The limp quickly turned into paralysis of the leg, so it became clear that she hadn't just gotten a sprain or something. Also, her poops were runny and green. Monday evening, it became clear that she was wasting and her breathing was labored. Tuesday morning, I found her stone cold dead in the brooder.

I assume now that the lump was a tumor of some sort. Marek's is evidently a possibility, although I assume that, as a store-bought chick, she would have been vaccinated, and so far, the other chick she was raised with has shown no signs of disease. And the farm store staffers we showed her to had never seen anything quite like it.

If anyone has any insights to offer about my little girl's fate, I'd be very interested to hear them. Thanks.
