Has Anyone Seen this re: Homeschooling?

What do you expect from Kalifornia? They are just as bad as Illinois though.

I love some of the arrogant comments made by some regarding the "elite of the elite" because they are schooled at home. I do not know anyone who is home schooled. However, the general impression I am getting is one of "I am better than you." That is unfortunate. I am probably the only one who will say it though.

If you doubt me, read some of your own posts.

Good Luck!

I don't see it... I do see that obviously some people are sensitive to stereo types like:

Home schooled students aren't socialized...

I.M.O. the goal of any child being educated in any setting should not be focusing on socializing. My social life and my work don't necessary go together in the adult world, why would it be mandatory in an educational setting? Children should be allowed to grow and develop in an non-judgemental setting and to be honest I don't always see or remember public school being such. I do know that in every job I have ever done, that my public school experience in a very ethnically diverse school could never had prepared me for working with people my parents age as my peer or having someone younger be my boss.

When you are on my side of the fence, you find that people are very judgemental about your choice for your family. My in-laws were public school teachers and very good ones and they do not agree with us on this... so we have agreed to disagree.

We all want want to do what is best for our children and the original point to this post was that in CA, a judge has made a ruling that has now brought the freedom of educational choice to the forefront... Could you imagine if they made a requirement that you couldn't have children unless you had a degree in early childhood development and were a registered nurse...
Where it will lead, who knows. I don't see such a ruling being able to stand in front of higher courts and I do see the issue having to be addressed by the current government in CA, this isn't 1950, the commies aren't trying to take over the U.S.

That is certainly not what I was implying, at all. What I said is true, though. Not in all cases, but for the most part is how it is, simply fact. I'm sorry that's the impression that you got.

All about the EGG, I'm very sorry that you feel that way. If I did anything that made you feel that way, I'm very, very sorry. I hope that what we said hasn't impacted your view on homeschooled kids. I promise you that we didn't mean to sound rude or snotty. We were just stating our opinion. Like I said, I'm very sorry if I sounded rude or snotty. I didn't mean too.

I homeschool my children and we are very concerned about this, but I think it will be resolved. The problem is that California has old laws on the books and did not change their laws when homeschooling was popularized like most states did. Seeing as how the Governor along with, what appears to be, most of the educational officials are supporters of homeschooling I think legislation will be proposed that will lift this ban.

What strikes fear is that anti homeschooling officials in other states will see this as an opportunity to go after homeschoolers since there is legal precidence set. This could have a trickle down effect as it takes time to ammend a state's constitution.

That being said I am very concerned about families in CA. I hope this does not effect anymore people than it already has. There is a petition to depublish this ruling. This will keep this ruling from effecting other court cases across the country. You don't have to be from California, or homeschool, to sign it.

Editing to say that if you are familiar with homeschooling you know who the hslda is. If you are unfamiliar I just want to say that they are now very involved in this case. This petition most likely will make a difference in this case. Almost a quarter of a million people have signed this petition already, but thats not enough. They want as many people as possible to sign this in an effort to let courts nationwide know that this is important to citizens.

Rocket Raley, I am sorry that your county is like that and you are having a hard time home schooling. If she's in algebra 2 already, is there a community college in the area? Here, we can choose to go to community college for IB or Running start as early as the 9th grade?

A q to the home schoolers, how would one do it if both parents are working to keep a roof over head? There are a good number of struggling families here so am curious how someone like them could do it?

RocketRaley,
I pm'd you about some social groups near you. Let me know if I can help. Editing to tell you that I know Emanual in Hartsville offers some classes ala carte to homeschoolers, I think Robert E Lee will too if you are interested. Maybe you could afford just to let her take one, or two classes for the experience of it.

When you take on educating your children, you also have to make allowances to offer them social opportunites. There are homeschooling groups in every county and almost every kid friendly facility. In SC we have homeschooling Mondays at the zoo weekly, homeschooling classes at the Museum weekly, all of the aquariums have homeschooling programs. I live in a rural area and there are 12 families within a 10 mile radius of me that homeschool...we make an effort to get together. There is also the rec. department which offers all sports for very little $$. There are classes every Tues. in Camden for all ages, Spanish, History, Latin...etc. There are homeschooling classes at the Fine Arts Center in Camden. There are homeschool days at the ice rink, the bowling arena, the skating rink. There are lots and lots more opportunities to do things for all ages. There is way more out there than most families can schedule. Sumter has tons to offer, which may be closer.

I just realized that Florence may be closer than Cola. I am in the middle of both. Florence has as much as Columbia has to offer. I can get you a list together of what they have too if you'd like. Just name a bigger sized town and I'll find ya'll something to do.

Let me know if I can help you enjoy this time with her anymore. They are grown and gone so fast.

Editing one last time to tell you that there are also volunteer opportunities. I know that Lee County Animal Shelter needs teens to come in and help out. If you've never seen the shelter it is stuck way out on Bethune Hwy, obviously neglected. I think there are already other teen volunteers there that she could hang out with. I'm asssuming that she likes animals, since you obviously do. I heard this from a volunteer with the Kershaw shelter.

Its funny.
In California you don't need a credential to

teach college,

teach at a private school

substitute,

or to "long-term" substitute in a public school (Thats when you teach a class for the school year)

So why pick on home schoolers?
