Hatch-Along - Setting eggs week of Feb 4th..anyone else?

Wait....did you say GROCERY STORE EGGS?
LOL! Yep, a dozen fertile brown eggs from safeway. And most of them are developing nicely.

Set 24 Polish eggs in my classroom on Feb 5th. Been candling every few days throughout the process.. I have two that were clear, and one that we discovered today has just stopped. There's a bloody ring and a floppy ickness going on inside. My group of fifth graders had a moment of silence for the loss of egg number 11, but then became very excited when we were able to see a very clear chicken foot seeming to wave "hi" at us from egg number 8. They were all so quiet and still through the whole process, but when that little clawed foot wiggled into view, there was a huge gasp, followed by a whispered, "Its a MIRACLE"... :)

Word has gotten out that Mrs. Morgan is hatching again, so I've had a visit from almost all of my students from last year, and a few of their parents. :) I was pretty proud of my kids for their essays on the for or against the chick makeover project. All but one student was absolutely opposed to poking a hole in the shell to inject dye into it. They said no way would we risk the lives of our chicks for pure vanity. lol.. I love my students.

This is my absolute favorite thing I do all year. (Although I was one of two teachers picked to represent our school when the district designs our new Reading curriculum, so I may actually be 2 hrs away at the head of the Diocese on hatch day... talk about bad timing!)

I just love hearing about classrooms hatching chicks.

"Its a Miracle," AWWWWW (Yes, it is!)

so I had a horrible dream last night. I woke up at 5 because of it.. and haven't been back to bed. I dreamed that I let all the chickies hatch, then went in the next day to get them out of the incubator, and someone had turned my temp up to 160, and all the babies were cooked... like, they looked like chicken nuggets with beaks and feet. To make it worse, as I was sitting there crying over them, my class walked in and then I had 16 fifth graders crying too.

It took all my willpower not to immediately get dressed and go up to the school to check on things. lol... I actually couldn't even remember what day it was for a good 5 minutes, and I woke up trying to figure out how to go buy chicks and pass them off as the hatched chicks so my students wouldn't know I'd ruined everything and become a murderer...

wow that was a vivid dream. No more girl scout cookies before bed for me!
