welcome. if you have online account billing you can go back in time and search your old bills and look at how they have increased with adding the birds. Quick books and other programs like it are a good resource. When all else fails, schedule a consult with an accountant for guidance.

Hmmmmm....have to figure a way to calculate electric usage. That might be difficult. Milage I hadn't thought of; thank you. I'd only be keeping LF chickens and some few turkeys. Concentration on the chickens. Layers, dual purpose, show, several breeds, but haven't narrowed down which yet. That's part of this years work, and why I'm in the swap forum. (Plus, BHep enabled me into here.). Thanks COF!
Look at IRS regs on electric usage. If you don't have meters to your barns, etc. or you brood in the house you can use a percentage basis for utilities. You can also do percentage (admittedly probably low) on internet cost, phone cost, etc. if used for business purposes. If you advertise in newspaper that can be claimed. Best tip is if town is a little ways away, always make sure that you pick up something related to the business such as feed, meds, etc. and claim the mileage in. That way the trip to town to do chores just became a true deduction for IRS purposes. We live 35 miles from large town, and a friend owns his own repair shop. Anytime he & his wife go into town for dates, groceries, etc. he always picks up parts for his repair business which means the trip is business mileage.

Depreciation for the various types of barns and fencing, tractors etc. is best handled by a farm professional or someone with a very reliable depreciation schedule as it can get quite tricky especially as if anything is sold later it becomes a gain. Animals that are raised on the farm are a true sale. Purchased breeder animals are depreciable over a different time frame.

I'm thinking of ordering from Sandhill Preservation. I would like to get a couple of breeds that are new to swap but would like to make sure that there was some interest also.

I'm thinking about the Flame Jaerhon, Red Sussex, Redcaps, assorted Dorkings, and assorted Leghorns as they carry several cool colors including Black, Buff, Exchequer and Mille Fleur.

Would anyone be interested in eggs of the above? Let me know. I just have to convince hubby I really NEED to order these.

I'm ordering Dorkings because my shipped eggs only have 6 developing out of 30. I can't seem to get anything to develop that is shipped from that direction. I'm not sure what the PO does, but it is ugly between me and Ohio.

Ohio has become the US Mail black hole of the Midwest, I swear.
