I pick mine up at the po and they always mark down the damage, but I accepted it because I had hoped that I could at least get a couple eggs out of it......And I did get 2 that I saw veins in after candeling
I think I've told some of you this story, but here goes again with the USPS horror stories.
I used to raise Ostriches, Emus, and Rheas. I started when I was about 15. Any type of Ratite was my favorite bird for a few years. I spent Christmas money, birthday money, any money I got on getting more. I even started a job at a groomer's in town that I hated scooping poop to pay for my addiction. Well, after about two years, I decided that I'd like to see if I could sell their eggs to help with feed prices.
Backstory: When I got my first Ostriches, my grandpa and I drove about 250 miles to Illinois to pick them up. When we got them, we accidentally ran over a nest of eggs with our pickup truck and the horse trailer. Well, to our surprise, not a single egg broke, but instead, the truck jumped and the eggs popped out the side. I was IMPRESSED to say the least.
Continuing the story (I love that I can interject into the plot line like that
): I sold my first batch of Ostrich eggs online. It came time to ship them, so I bubble wrapped them, put them into styrofoam containers meant to fit them, and bubble wrapped that. I then put it in a box and set off to the Post Office. I sent the eggs out and went home. A few hours later, I got a call from our local PO that I needed to come pick up a package containing hazardous material. I had no idea what was going on. When I got there, they had my package sitting on the back steps of the Post Office and it was dripping EVERYWHERE! I opened it and my worst fears were realized. Somehow, before it even left our local office, they had literally broken every single egg in the box! How does that happen?
Needless to say, I'm a little bit leary about sending eggs in the mail now. But, hey, what other option do we have that isn't twice the price or more?
I got some new chickens today. I was told they were kentucky Specks, Anybody seen these before? I can't wait for the pullet to start laying! I will actually have eggs to offer for the swap!
