We just did a fertility & incubator test hatch. We set 12 fertile eggs & got 9 chicks. (One blood ring, one quitter, & I dropped one good egg on day 18. Still feel horrible about that.

) The fertility test didn't go as well. The English Orps have a lot of fluff, so the roo had problems getting things done. I have since learned to trim the backsides, & now it's all good.
Here's a handful of results.

Most are purebred Orps, but I couldn''t resist trying out a few mixes.
Here's an Easter Egger Orpington. She got her mama's cheeks.

The Mom

Here's another mix I had to try. The mama hen laid over 200 eggs last year AND hatched/brooded one batch of chicks. Talk about the perfect hen! Mom = white; Dad = Lavender. The chick looks like a reverse skunk, so we nicknamed it "Stinky."

We made a brooder out of DD's old school / 4H posterboards, a storage bin, & duct tape. It's not pretty, but very spacious, sturdy, & FREE.

My busy brooder

I just heard the first little chirp. I cant see any external pips yet. SOOOOO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!!
How did the hatch go?

The preschool is coming out for a field trip tomorrow to see the change on the farm from fall to spring and see the chicks they hatched all grown up! I just happen to have chicks right now and a few in the incubator set to hatch tonight/tomorrow!

Do you have multiple incubators? That's one busy classroom!

My daughter's 4H chicks will hatch April 12th & a broody decided to join the Easter Hatch a Long, so a few will hatch on April 5th.

I'm helping my son's preschool with their eggs on April 8 & then setting more for my own park district class on April15. Of course, I only donate the eggs when I teach these programs. Rehoming the chicks is their responsibility.

Our town will soon be taken over by baby chicks!

I hatch chicks that myself, family or friends are looking for/wanting so I have homes for them when they hatch

I do not have a roo so I have to get eggs from outside sources, but it is so worth it! The experience is amazing and the kiddos love it!!!! And me too...of course
