I let Doodle and Smudge out to free range this morning, and tossed some crumble in the flower bed I was weeding to keep them close. Doodle and Smudge are my two Cornish X. They decided to wander off, and after a minute I when to check the garage were I knew they would be, scavenging the feed bags. I found Doodle in the cardboard box that contained na empty feed bag, and the string that ties the top shut. She had about a foot and a half of string sticking out of her mouth.
I immediately panicked, tried to lightly pull on the string hoping it would pull out, but it didn't I decided my best course of action was to cut it.
This happened about 5 minuets ago. What should I do?? I've read that string can get caught in their digestive track and kill them, is this the case? I can't believe this happened, does anyone have any suggestions?
She's acting fine for now, but I'm really concerned. I'll attach a picture of the left over string that I cut, and a new chunk of string that I pulled off of na unopened feed back for reference. I think she swallowed a ton of string, I really worried. 😟

Is there still string in her mouth? Down her throat? Pictures? How is so doing?

After I cut it, I believe the little tail went down her throat. Sadly, we had to leave for town at 1 for puppy training, d as I I were o if be back until 5ish. 😟
I’ll try to upload the pic when I get back, it’s on my computer. If the string was as long as the other fresh chunk, then she swallowed over a foot. I’m really concerned. 😣
She was doing fine when I left, I really really hope she comes out okay. :fl

If its cotton will be fine! All that gravel and grit will mash it up. If its nylon its a bigger problem. That said - if you look at my history - my chicken swallowed a 36" THICK nylon cord and survived another 6 months until a hawk got her (we are still hoping said hawk choked on the string and died) BUT will be ok! Can give some olive oil in feed to help lubricate but honestly I don't think necessary

Thank you! This is very reassuring. I'm pretty sure that its string not nylon, but I'll double check. I read in another thread that bread soaked in olive oil could help it pass in a ball, so of course I just ran out and fed some of that.
She seems to be doing just fine, so I have high hopes for my sweet Doodle. :) Thanks everyone!

Hi! I’m hoping you see this even 3 years later. My poor chicken swallowed about 2.5 feet of nylon string as well. I’m searching what I should do for her. Avian Vet said it’s a pretty simple $300 surgery to remove it from her crop but seeing this is reassuring. She is acting totally fine right now but keeping an eye on her. Any advice?

You probably won’t get an answer here but if you make a new post under the “emergencies/injuries/illnesses” thread someone should be able to help you!
