I need help! The coyotes have moved in on us. I've not lost any of my chickens to them yet.....but they are coming out during the day now. My son was playing in the front yard the other day with the dog and he came running into the house and looked like he had seen ghost. The child was trembling and could not even speak. He finally mumble "coyote". I grabbed the gun and ran out the door and only in time to see it running up thru the woods. I shot a couple of times in the air hoping to scare it and any others off. It's not illegal to kill them in North Carolina and there is not a "coyote season". I've got 2 live traps that I set every night, but have only managed to catch a whooper of a coon and an evil possum. I'm really worried about my child playing outside not to mention my chickens. The chicks are in the run during the day while I'm at work and then I let them out to free-range after I get home. Any ideas?

Scaring them will only make it harder to kill them. Shoot to kill or dont shoot. They may just go nocturnal. Having them in the day is GOOD so you can take a good shot. Get a couple and the rest get leary of the place. At least for awhile.

We have a tonne of coyotes around our place. When we first moved in they were everywhere(coming into the yard etc.) as the homestead sat vacant for close to 2yrs.

Once we moved in with our 2 GSD's and they started to mark thier territory they started staying away...

I hear them singing from the back 40, but havent had a problem with them coming anywere near the house.

I have a feeling that our two 100lb GSD's are just too much trouble for them to bother messing with.

I actually get my lawn chair and sit outside and watch over my flock each evening. I think I have only missed one evening. Yes, i sit there with a gun. I have a thick, fat, warm snow suit ready for this winter. I dont want to lose my girls.

My husband started sitting outside with me and its really been romantic sitting together and sipping on our ice tea, watching the girls play.

thus the reason i have a .22 Long range rifle and high velocity hollow point round. I live out in the country here in colorado and we have every right to shoot them . Sorry for the people that dont like killing animals but i have already lost 15 chickens this year to coyotes and im not taking chances anymore . But yeah thats my protection from them

The traps are no good as the coyotes are to smart for them. My nephew has tried and tried to catch the coyotes via live traps on their farm and has learned the only way to get rid of them is to either hire a bounty hunter or kill them yourselves. The bounty here where I live in VA is something like $50 a coyote if you kill one.

The coyotes are there sizing up and down your property and dinner. They will eventually move in for what they are after. Tell your son to stay close to the house while he's outside playing, make sure he never goes alone even if it's just the dog that goes out with him, and you need to keep your gun handy and ears open. Coyotes absolutely cannot be trusted.
