Sorry, the post was wrong. He actually had never made a crack in the egg in the first place. I helped him by opening it a little bit. Should I have never opened it? And let it die in the egg?

I somewhat agree. When I helped a chick out, it was thriving but weak. I am a strong believer in letting nature take its course.
