Help for poor little chick

The blood may be from something irritation her intestines, such as pine shavings that she may have eaten. I am going to tag @casportpony in case she has any suggestions on how to clear a crop impaction in a baby chick possibly by tube feeding fluids.

I’m hoping it’s just irritation like you said . Still waiting to get a picture of her poop . It’s not all bloody just a few spots here and there .
She will drink but she won’t eat much at all . I’ve tired plain yogurt, plain baby food , the 2 mixed and just tried a little egg yolk with coconut oil mixed in and she could care less . Is there anything soft that she just can’t resist ? I don’t think feeding anything solid is a good idea but I am no expert . I have chick starter on hand. Feel like things are going down hill a bit again, not sure I’m doing the right thing.

There is only a tiny bit of blood in that ome . A fair amount of liquid coming out of her as well .

Try very watery chick starter, and place it on the side of her beak with a QTip. Are you still giving the coconut oil and massaging the crop? Water is important as well. I am not sure that she can digest pine shavings if that is what is stuck in her crop. @azygous, do you have a suggestion on how to clear an impacted crop in a week old chick? They have treated several days with coconut oil and crop massage. @casportpony is she too young for a feeding tube?

Been giving her the coconut oil as often as possibles, but it’s hard to get into her. She’s good to take water when I offer it To her but not sure she’s not drinking on her own . Her crop Is still so hard I think I can follow it up her neck in a hard tube like . She has more energy and can stand and now is jumping out of the little bin I have her in . She will perch on the side of her nest (a bowl with paper towel in it) she’s also become feisty, I used to be able to handle her with ease and now she’s a little brat . So I know something is working . I’ll try for another’s day or 2 but I’m thinking maybe at this point I am just prolonging her suffering if that impacted crop isint gonna budge and surgery is not possible . Thanks a million times over for any advice thrown my way .

You say you're having trouble getting the oil into this chick. Are you chilling the oil to make it solid? Are you prying open the beak and holding it open while you slip a sliver of the coconut oil into the beak? Are you closing the beak afterward to allow the chick to swallow?

Those three steps are crucial. You also need to keep prying open the beak and inserting the oil until you get a half a teaspoon of oil into the chick. Then the fourth step is very gentle massage to try to break up the mass. Wait a half hour and repeat the process with another half teaspoon of oil.

I just barely scanned this thread. Are we talking about the same three-week old chick from page one? Or is there now a one-week old chick in trouble? I might try a stool softener on a three-week old chick, half a capsule, but I hesitate on a week old chick unless it's in immediate danger of dying.

Thanks so much for the reply , yes I know long thread , I’ve tired To include as much detail As possible. It’s the same 3 week old chick . I tried half a capsule of stool softener and got most of it into her . It did nothing for her crop so not sure I should do it again . I’m not gonna lie I haven’t prayed her beak open and put the coconut oil in , i Use the end of a cut Qtip amd rub a chilled chunk on the side of her beak and I can usually get some into her. No where near a half teaspoon tho. I will do what you said and pry her beak open and get it into her , she’s come so far In the last 2 days. Had to give her a bigger bin cause she was jumpimg out of hers . Yes jumping , the bird who couldn’t even stand. She is now drinking and eating baby food on her own. She chirps a lot now too. I will spend today doing the coconut oil thing thank you for being strait forward.

WOw, my friend sure has some bad luck. She has another chick with a bump on it’s head that went out of control over night . She is getting a very hard first lessson on raising animals.
