During the day i occasionally see little red spider things.
Poultry mites don't usually come out during the day.
Might want to do and exam and some research before breaking out the permethrin tho.
This will get you started.
My Bug Check notes:
Have you checked them over real well for mites and/or lice?

Google images of lice/mites and their eggs before the inspection so you'll know what you're looking for.

Part the feathers right down to the skin around vent, head/neck and under wings.

Best done well after dark with a strong flashlight/headlight, easier to 'catch' bird and also to check for the mites that live in structure and only come out at night to feed off roosting birds.

Wipe a white paper towel along the underside of roost to look for red smears(smashed well fed mites).

Good post about mite ID by Lady McCamley:

Thank you for that! I am a bit busy but I will read the article today just later. Everyday I check under wings and neck/head and under vent for mites or anything like that. Lately I have had a few cases of some sort of mice lice or flea. I’m not sure, i will have to research more about what they were but they weren’t red spider mites. Occasionally I see little red mites that are shaped like circular spiders that are hanging around trees and my coop. I check for them during the day though so tonight I will as well.

Wait so tonight I need to look at my chickens legs and then rub a damp paper towel over the roost... is that it? And if I see them what is the treatment? Just leave it until I get the permethrin? And also @aart, so when you say many aren’t harmful to chickens, if the non harmful ones are on the chickens, do they just keep multiplying and infest the chicken but not kill it?

Yes, re-read the notes I left above.

Yes.

Chances are they won't be.

Ok so last night I checked for mites and didn’t find anything. It seems that most of them pant during the day today or have raspy breathing. I started to give them the doxycycline and tetracycline in their waters just in case. It really isn’t that hot out but they are acting like it’s extemely hot. the winter was a bit chillier than usual so maybe they grew too many downy feathers and now they are having trouble breathing... I’m not sure. I checked their legs last night and the roosts and I didn’t find any red smears. There were some bugs but nothing that seemed alarming. Today though, I was giving my red hampshire a little check up and a red bug jumped on me. I checked her over and didn’t find anymore but it wasn’t a little red spider, it was more of a super tiny bug.

So also, I have another little issue going on with my new hamsphire. I made a thread about her but I will just sum it up: for the past months she started to lay eggs. Except she lays them on her roost at night and it’s a yolk and egg white and then the shell comes on the side and isn’t hard at all. I have made a thread and I know there are pictures of it if I didn’t describe it well enough. Since it has been so long I decided to give calcium and D3 every other day.
She lays these eggs every other night and she is usually pretty constipated to get it out. It takes from 10 minutes to awhile depending on how late it is.
Well she had a very difficult time squeezing the egg out last night and this morning I discovered these red things on her. I attached pictures. My idea is that since she squeezes a lot that broke a blood vessel or something. During this time of weird egg laying she also has had a decently big abdomen. It isn’t ascites but it feels like liquidy fat and it pretty big. Any ideas on this as well? (I can post this in the thread meant for her but I thought since this is still an active thread I should just post here)
