Help! Hen with vent issues (Pics)

IMO...our beloved girls that are prolific layers (I have a couple) tend to have problems in the manufacturing function as they age. Not fair I know other wise healthy and I truly wish there were hysterectomies. So I guess it just God’s way of sayin your little body has worn out. I don’t like to post things like this. Make her happy, spoil the heck out of her. In the end you’ll know why (not knowing is terrible). I can tell from your posts how much you care. She just might surprise you and live much longer chickens are some amazing creatures. It’s in God’s hands and He’ll be kind because she was so loved. Keep us posted Ok?

It is interesting. I have not seen that before.

I agree that treating her with Permethrin for the mites would be best. You want those to be gone yesterday. With the external parasites eliminated, she will be much more comfortable.

It may be getting close to the end for her, you just never know with chickens. Since you report that she is still active, eating/drinking, I would just monitor her. Controlling parasites would be priority of course, seeing that she is eating, giving her a nice treat here and there and lots of love would be my recommendation.

I don't think a vet would be worth it because I am not too sure that one would be able to do anything to help.
I think if you are still seeing mites after applying DE so often that you may want to stop using it because it obviously doesn't work. Get some permethrin to eliminate the mites so she can feel somewhat better.

Agreed on the permethrin!
Please ditch the DE for this poor girl. She (AND YOU!) have enough on your plates right now.
Think of it this way, if you were miserable with head lice and someone kept sprinkling baby powder on your head, you’d want to cry.
She deserves to be comfy as could be and spoiled rotten for the remainder of her days. :love
I am sending you both a big hug! :hugs:hugs

Wow thank you everyone for your kind and sweet posts... it really does help :hugs Honestly it’s just nice knowing there are other people as dedicated to their chickens as me. One of the things I hate the most about losing a chicken (or any non cat or dog pet) is having to justify what you’re going though, “she wasn’t JUST a chicken,” etc. But you guys get it and I’m so grateful.

I will definitely keep this post updated as the week goes on!

Also regarding the de vs. permethrin, I got a fresh thing of permethrin today! I know it works wonders, but I was nervous it might irritate her already sensitive vent area. But yeah definitely gotta get rid of the remnant mites ASAP, so I’m ditching the de! Again much thanks for your support!!

The DE probably irritates.

We get it. Some people may not. Chickens are Fasaciting and Clever some beautiful
their own individual ways. They can be stubborn or silly. But when your chickens trusts you and looks you in the eye when you talk to them and their pupils dilate and pulse fully engaged in the chickenese that your speaking and you understand their chirps and clucks that’s a bond that’s is hard to explain to others. When they work side by side with me in the garden digging in the dirt together I find peace and calm. They follow me to my chair when I take a break in the shade and wound rather hang out with us instead of wandering
Off. The attachment is on both side as yes...it’s justa chicken. But don’t tell us that because we know differently
