Hey guys,
I'm absolutely devastated. One of my hens has had bubbles in her eyes since before I joined. I knew nothing about poultry diseases before joining, so of course I didn't think anything of it. When I joined, I did think about it, but before looking into it I started treating bumble foot, hence forgetting about the bubbles. I then totally forgot about the issue, and focused on learning about other diseases, etc.
Now, Since I have been spending time with this hen after she hurt her foot, I remembered her issues. I looked up other symptoms of Mycoplasma, the respiratory infection that causes bubbles in the eyes. I refused to believe that it could be a respiratory infection, I was terrified. After reading other symptoms, nasal discharge, and swollen sinuses, I'm kinda panicking that it could be Mycoplasma.
The bubbles have been going on from before I joined, so longer then a year ago. That means that my ducks certainly have it, and the rest of my flock. It probably wouldn't be the end of the world to pay for Tyaln, but It wouldn't be preferred. Other reasons for bubbles?
If theres any chance this isn't want I think it is please say so, its nerve racking! ARGH! 😟

I read that Tylan antibiotics are the best antibiotic for treatment. Their also available on Chewy, so thats not to difficult to get a hold of. Is the powder given in water? I'm sure I can find this out on my own, but thought I'de ask anyway. How much powder per gallon of water? Is 3-5 days of treatment correct?

Any suggestions are helpful, I'm pretty nervous, I feel bad for not looking into it sooner, or when I first noticed the bubbles. Anyone else have expense with this disease, or other reasons for bubbles? I have no idea what to do. 😭

Whoa! Hold on. Is it just the one hen with actual symptoms? Are bubbling eyes the only symptom? If it's just bubbles in the eyes (both eyes or just one?) it may be a simple eye infection or a foreign body irritating the eye. Not all bubbles in the eye automatically mean MG.

Try flushing the eye(s) with saline eye wash or lubricant. Then use a dab of Neosporin directly in the eye.

MG is so contagious, in the span of time since you first noticed this hen had bubbly eye(s) at least another one or two birds would be showing symptoms. Try the eye flush and ointment. Then just calmly keep an eye out for symptoms in the others.

Meanwhile, it won't hurt to get a supply of Tylosin to have on hand just in case. This place sells it without a prescription but they are in and out of stock so I would order it while you can. It's water soluble powder and easy to treat an entire flock in their water. https://www.jedds.com/shop/tylan-soluble-100-g/

Hey! I have some decently good news for you, it says it usually resolves on its own, but if not can usually be cured! Go to a bet or look up some cures. but the only bad thing is it will be a carrier for life, and if spooked/scared the illness will flare up again. so keep them calm, and dont panic yourself. :) Tell me if theres anything else i can do, sorry if im not much help.

Thank you! I searched here and looked for other reasons that she may have bubbles in her eye and couldn't find any, this is me in panic mode. I am so relieved that it may not be MG, thank you!!!!
I haven't see anyone else with symptoms, but, have seen a few head shakes from momma duck, and a few sneezes from the babies, further expanding my concerns.
I'm really glad I can bring it down a notch. Thats so relieving! Wow, I panicked didn't I. 😜

Ps, are you sure it isnt fowl pox? Im not the best with illnesses, im not sure if its the same thing, not possible. Or whatever. But i hope thats a thought that may be better? It says it can be treated and/or goes away

Heres some things it could be : common eye infection, Fowl pox? *Not to sure, not the best with illnesses* Or just eye irration, i think personally your fine . But keep a eye on her

I had a hen just a couple weeks ago with a bubbly eye. All I did was to flush the eye with saline and she has had no further symptoms since.

I've also had a couple of cases of sinus infection. The symptoms are bubbly eye and often swelling under the eye. Again, this is minor. Eye flush and Neosporin or terramycin in the eye and it cleared right up.

With MG, it's rarely just one chicken. And if it does start with one chicken, others would be infected so quickly, you probably wouldn't have had time to notice the first chicken. I'd say it unlikely this is MG.

I'll look. I did insect her for soars earlier today, (I think the fact that I've been looking for symptoms all day lead to panic lol) and wasn't sure if I saw anything, mostly just pecking order scabs. I will look again though. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thank you thank you thank you! I'm so relieved it could be something else!

It is only one eye, and otherwise she's completely healthy. My other chickens haven't exploited symptoms, but I haven't been paying as much attention to them.

I think I have Salein, I'll start rinsing it out tomorrow, and applying Neosporin. All I have left is Neosporin with pain relief, is that alright or should I pick up some original stuff tomorrow? Luckily were going into town tomorrow, so I can grab some stuff. 😉

Yayayayya! I'm so happy to hear you say this! I always get so freaked out with respiratory symptoms since its a forever illness, when I should probably do more research before panicking. Thanks for your response, after looking for symptoms all day I got nervous.
I'll flush out her eye, and apply Neosporin, thanks again!
