Help: Peachick with swollen face! ?

I just weighed 3 of mine that hatched at the end of August and they weighed between 1.6kg and 1.8kg (3.52 - 3.96 pounds), so probably a good idea to weigh her and the one that came with her.

That's definitely a big difference considering the breeder I bought them from stated they were hatched Mid-late June. They are up for the night but I will weigh them both in the morning. Thanks for being so responsive all of you and thank you Kathy for all the information you've been providing!

I had typed up this long message to only have my darned phone die! Frustrating!

Ok first thing. .great news!
Swelling is already gone!
I weighed both of them this morning and the vet chick weighed in at 3 lbs 1oz!
The other 3 lbs 6 oz.! So relieved about that! So the vets office printout was obviously entered incorrectly!
You can see the swelling is almost completely gone.

Pics aren't good this morning for some reason but. .

Now the second thing..
Yesterday I was observing the flock to notice my other peachick had swelling starting at the cheek. I immediately brought him in his is on the opposite side as the other. I was able to get the two doses of each med and his swelling is completely gone overnight! Amazing!
Here he is this morning.

Now they are just "chillin'"

i am now concerned that because I'm using double the meds they won't be getting the proper overall dosage needed.

Glad they are normal weight, lol. Call the vet and have them correct the info in their computer in case you ever have to go back.

Baytril starts killing bacteria in 2 hours, so the swelling being gone in two hours doesn't surprise me. Now what you need to do is buy some Baytril, but to give the proper dose, you need to call your vet and ask them about the medicine they gave you. Ask them how many mg per ml it is (the liquid they gave you) and the dose they chose, as in "how many mg per kg" is she supposed to get.

This is very important, the medicines listed above are much more concentrated than what you are using right now, so you must call your vet and have them answer the two questions. NO_NOT_give the same amount of the above medicines, they are all 10% (100mg per one ml) and the correct dose will probably be 0.14ml twice a day.

Yeah, that gets into the whole "we can't medicate a bird we haven't treated" discussion... dunno if this is that kind of vet, or a sensible country vet, it could be worth a phone call, but I wouldn't get too optimistic

Thanks! I was seriously sick to my stomach to see him coming down with it too! I really thought it would get worse before it got better but yes the Baytril really worked great! I've had fowl for around 4 years and this is my first experience with any kind of upper respiratory or infection of any kind. I've never used antibiotics on any of my birds. For as much as I hate it happened I'm glad it hasn't been too bad.

I also called yesterday about the fecal test and they called me back but I was on a conference call but message stated that due to the concern with finances the vet decided to put that towards treatment and didn't do it. Yet never allowed me to have that input. Hmmm.. said if I wanted to have it done I could bring in another fresh sample! ?! $30 is what she said it would have cost. I will just inquire with a local vet about having it done. I did just treat them in November when I released them with the Ivomec Eprinex drench so I'd be surprised other than maybe Cocci if they are carrying any. I haven't had any reason to think otherwise.

Thanks! I love my IB's but these two are sure stealing my heart. Now I've been so close and hands on though I think more and more they are both boys. The one I have seen what appears to be the loose barbed feathers but of course yesterday it looks like the one I've hoped a hen may have the same looking feathers. ?? Time will tell but unless new feathers for either sex can appear that way then I'd bet both boys.
