I picked up two silkies today at a swap. The person told me they are 4 months old but gave no further information. The frizzle has 4 toes. The other has 5. Both have black skin and grey/slate everything else. Gender and breed guesses would be appreciated. Thanks

The one with silkied feathering does not look right in the eyes and overall appearance (ill)-could be a full silkie pullet. The other looks to be a pullet too. With normal feathering it's an obvious cross with silkie/?? Two pullets if you were given the correct age. Keep these two well away from other poultry (quarantine).

Okay, look under "free range possum "reply in more detail about 3 Buff orphibgton chick genders. Silkies, yes, like pigeons, are tough even for seasoned breeders to tell. I do not have a real good closeup of the eyes, but the healthier chick, a male? With pigeons, ducks and fowl..I've found males usually look up/stretch neck at a loud noise. But, My go to is eye shape. Females actually have eyes where you can see inner eye duct , and a slight eyelid thicker and males, even very early, have very round eyes. I assume the females of bird species have extra fold and bigger tear ducts at corners to protect there eyes and wash them of debris as they reach under themselves to adjust eggs. A little practice on your grown birds, and you can test my theory. It's been accurate for me no mater the type wild or domestic. See pic and tell me what you think/share! The third pic of dutch, you can clearly see eye shape distance. My silkie is a roo.
