Two ideas to mull over.... make the wagon look like a boxcar racer, or Herbie the Lovebug and dress them up as old school racers. A couple ping pong balls would make perfect racer helmets for them. Your son would just need a checkered flag and driver's cap to be period accurate.

OR you could make the wagon into a train car and dress them up as hobos..... and dress your son as a conductor.
