Hen not eating and losing weight...

hey there is a slight problem today with her. I've been in university for the whole day and wasn't able to look after her though my family had her checked, when i returened i saw her left eye swollen and she was struggling to see through it and along with the eye the small part of the face was also swollen. But she is eating fine. The only thing she tends to eat is millet and nothing else. Can anyone tell me what might be the reason for her swollen face and eye.

Pleased to hear that her appetite has returned. Make sure she has access to grit if you are feeding her millet, especially if you have isolated her for supportive care as it is easy to overlook. Personally I feed sick birds things that are very easy to digest, like scrambled egg or wet/fermented mash rather than whole grains or seeds or if I do, I soak/ferment them.
Swollen eyes are usually as a result of a respiratory infection, injury or foreign body but it could also be a tumour. Has she shown any other symptoms of respiratory illness? You could irrigate the eye with sterile saline and perhaps apply an ophthalmic antibiotic ointment.

i have applied eye ointment and no sign of respiratory illness.I will try to give her mash from tomorrow onwards

Certainly offer a wet mash but if millet is all she wants I would continue to give her that but maybe soak it overnight to swell and soften it and ensure she has access to grit. Eating anything is better than not eating. I will even resort to bread soaked in gravy or blood to tempt them if they are sick and losing interest.

i offered her liver yesterday and she ate some of it.So i'll go for wet mash in the morning.

That is a completely normal behavior for a cockerel. :hmm

well i haven't butchered him for this sole reason but for other reasons too.I have 2 roosters so letting one of them BarBQued isn't a bad decision.
My statement may have come across not as intended...

This :hmm face was directed toward the teenage hormonal raging idiots that many cockerels become and NOT at your management.

I'm sure for most of us there is a lot more than one thing that comes into consideration when culling. I TRULY meant pride and encouragement for you! :highfive:

I have seen others who don't take it seriously and allow their pullets to be over mated making statements to the effect of "she must like him or she wouldn't squat" which is just so frustrating to me. :duc

Still pulling for your gal. :fl

here is the picture of the pullet. Can anyone tell me what has happened to her she is eating fairly and i think this may be coryza. Please tell me how can i treat it.Its been 2 days and she barely sees from this eye.Her weight has grown a bit and she has shown improvement but this new eye problem is surely an issue.

5 months old which i got about a month ago.

couple of weeks ago she used to eat well but was loosing some weight. But yesterday she was not eating properly and her weight is at the very end

Was not eating puffed up.

I have a rooster who is always trying to mount her.And she struggles very badly to get him off.I think maybe this is because of the stress.Kindle help me out.

Her poop was runny and thick cream colored and afterwards she pooped light greenish

left eye swollen and she was struggling to see through it and along with the eye the small part of the face was also swollen.

Does she have a bad odor about her?

It's good that she is separated out, make sure she is not overheating with the lamp and there is plenty of ventilation/fresh air getting to her.

I agree, it could be Infectious Coryza or you may be dealing with Mycoplasma, Infectious Bronchitis or ILT which are fairly common too.

IF she has a bad odor and you think it's Coryza, then you can try treating her with a sulfa drug. Can you get some SMP-TMZ ( sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim) or Albon (sulfadimethoxine)?

If it's Mycoplasma, then an antibiotic like Tylan (Tylosin), Tiamulin (denagard) or one of the "cyclines" (tetra, oxy, doxy) would be better.
Antibiotics like these can also help with secondary infection from Infectious Bronchitis and ILT.

For the eye, try to keep it flushed out, if there is pus in there try to work that out. You can use an ophthalmic ointment in the eye. Terramycin eye ointment if you can find it.

Do what you can to keep her drinking and eating.

I realize you are in Pakistan, so you may have access to different medications/supplies than we do in the US. If you can tell us what you can get, we will try to help you with treatment. Keep in mind, that respiratory diseases are contagious and even if your pullet recovers, she will be a carrier of the illness.

we do have access to pretty much medicines here. But what we use best as an antibiotic is augmentin. So i'll try to give her this or any other antibiotic as prescribed by the vet. Another point is the vet here are much cheap so we have access to them all the time not worrying for the expense.

now today morning she started eating and still is looking weak but much better than yesterday. Her poop was runny and thick cream colored and afterwards she pooped light greenish. Now its 7:00 pm and she is drinking and eating much better.I also gave her scrambled egg in the evening. And i butchered the rooster today as he again tried to mount the pullet when i took her out with the rest of the flock. It seems that she is recovering.
Chicken keeper 1 cockerel 0! I almost spit my coffee when I read about the cockerel
