HERE WE GO AGAIN Anyone SETTING Aug 30th - Sept 8th join me!!

What is everyones's opinion or ideas about hatching during the winter?
I ask because my husband says no more after these but I still will want a few more plus I figure if I hatch now, well assume the next batch comes out mid to late Nov. then those I want to keep will be growing and the others will be some 4+ months old and then I can sell them off for a little more come spring because they will be a little older and you will be able to tell what they look like and or sex.

Or is this just the addiction talking

Sorry if i am answering twice.
I dont know how cold Tenn gets but if it gets be low freezing i would make sure i had a heated area for the babies even over 5 weeks old.or older if its really cold..Here inMo it can get pretty cold even in Nov occasionally and freezing or lower in Dec
I for sure wouldnt want mine in the house all winterLol
I have some eggs in now last hatch this year due next week and i am praying for a warm winter!

Folks I am going to put up the pictures I took tonight of the nine eggs I have.  They were put under my hen on August 30th so today is day 14.  This is my first hatch so please tell me about the condition of my eggs.  Do they look okay except the two I marked that I think they are nothing?

Brookhaven is most likely right but you went this far and one or 2 look sort of close Id go ahead to day 22 and see what happens.I candle mine at day 18 and by then the eggs dont show anythng but dark
.Question... could these be earlier than day 14 or are you possitive?

LOL Roxanne!! That is something I would do. I am just about done with mine too. I have the same idea of having the run separate from the coop. I actually am trying to save some money by using pallets. Wood is so darn expensive. Last week I was at Lowes and they told me I could have all the free pallets I wanted as long as they didn't have yellow on them (returnable ones.) So I ended up hauling home 2 BIG ones and 2 smaller ones. The wood on them is in good shape but pulling the boards out is such a pain. My justification is the fact that a sheet of plywood costs $22 and the pallets are free.
WOW $22? LOwes here mine for 1/2 ' in about $18.
This last one i used 1/4 " as its lighter weight but also $18 I think or $16. THEN i bought the 1/2 "for the roof.
GOlly i should ask here....it is better to not pay for the dang wood.
Suprised theyd let you take them miss a wood sale LOL
I have seen ads on craigs for pallets free though Thing is all are an hour away from me. Still worth it for a stack I guess.but since idont know how big they are might be a worthless trip.

I dont feel the wood is TOO bad as i havent been using that much for the tractor coops.. about one sheet each.Big coops yeah maybe 5 at least but the tractors then .some other boards for roosts window edging etc... ...the dang hardware is high!!I cant believe it . $2 or $3 a hinge..!!
Holy cow!
This one i didnt skimp on what i used so cost me over $100 with it all maybe $130 or so. Others i cheaped out and was about $80 I guess.
,Nails i got a million of them in my shed literally every size .... but i cant hammer one in straight to save my life
Geez and the wheels paid $6 a piece for some decent ones!
Should go to auctions and see what the old lawnmowers go for Just anxious to get it all done.
Got the cheapy wheels before and they barely roll. so went big this time. Well big for me.Run needs painting
.Red thing on top of the coop is the door.Need to "embelish "it.its a plain jane See the board where i need to block under the coop? GEEZ.Hope to finish the details today ..but rain coming dont know.

Believe it or not the 1/4"plywood was the $22 and the 1/2" was $16. I really do not want to go with the heavier wood. Wire is not cheap either. Ended up getting mine from Tractor Supply. Yesterday I went into Walmart and looked at their latches and hinges. They were cheaper than Lowes so I will probably end up buying them there.Love your coop. Can you take some pictures of the inside? Would love to see where you put the nesting boxes and roosts. What dimensions is it? I actually went out and purchased a Ryobi set of power tools from Home Depot.($100+.) Hated spending the $$ but now that I have used them I can honestly say it was well worth it. The drill alone has saved my hands in building both the incubators and run. Love the little circular saw that came with it too. I bought a table saw off of Craigslist for $50. Works great too. As soon as I have mine together I will post some pics too.

I received them in the mail on August 30th and placed them under my hen at that time. So you tell me what day you think they are...as I said this is my first...I KNOW NOTHING, HAHAHAHA Thanks Roxanne!!!

I candled one last time before lockdown. 64 out of 100 going into lockdown tonight. Due to hatch on Sunday.
Wow!! Lots of fuzzy butts for you. Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Sorrrreeeeeee!!!  I have been using my Little Giant with little to no probs over the last couple years and this hatch has almost been an hourly temp watch.  I've gone on lock down now because of it (and I'm only day 7!!!)  Don't give up yet - once I thoroughly cooked a whole pile of guinea eggs (way over 104 for an age .... it was one of our first hatchings and we had put a pile of water in for humidity and it completely messed our temps for Lord knows how long)  ..... needless to say we had 3 hatch ... the strongest surely did survive :).  So don't give up, but do watch that little giant and try very very very small, incremental changes to temp and wait a couple of hours for it to stabilise!!!

Okay, so will you guys confirm what I think I'm seeing? I think my eggs are dead. We candled and they should be 6 days in tonight, but they are fairly solid dark half way up the egg, and lighter colored on the top half. It is a very even line of light and dark. This is the blood having pooled after the early chick died, correct?

Thanks for input as we are newbies on incubating, and we're working with a really old and crotchety Little Giant. I think it is finally going to the grave if it killed the eggs. It was sitting on a shelf for like ten years before I fired it up a couple of weeks ago.

Actually if they are dark eggs I think that is what they might look like if they are developing...do you have any that look different? Can you see any veins at all or are the shells too dark?
