Hey southerners! Anyone else want to go wash oily birds?

I was reading some stuff about the oil spill tonight and I had a lightbulb. Let's move our BYC butts to one of the response centers and start cleaning!
Apparently there isn't much need for wildlife rescue volunteers yet, because they've only found one oily gannet so far. They expect this to change in the near future as more of it hits land.
I cannot leave until Wednesday when my last exam is over, but after that I'm free! Anyone else want to get together and volunteer if they need us?

An oil rig blew up in the Gulf of Mexico and it's gushing oil into the ocean at a rate of 5,000 barrels a day.
It only began to reach land today. Given the size, it is going to be pretty serious.

No wonder the price of gas went up 20cents this week

I wish they'd catch that stuff like the liquid gold that it is, instead of spilling it

My cousin was on one of the oil rigs that was 30 miles away from the rig that exploded. He was taking pictures, and managed to snap a shot of the cloud from it. I wish I had it to post here. Oh well... I'd do it if life wasn't hectic at home right now, between that and worrying that Jared's will be the next to go BOOM we're all a little tight to 'volunteer' anywhere right now on my end.

Oh MY Crud....they better get some paper towels out there and sop that mess up and squeeze it back into some barrels! I can't afford for them to be doing stuff like that....

It is a very bad situation with the oil spill, and the price of gasoline going up this week, and all the stuff that goes along with an oil spill. But this was a very tragic accident that cost 11 men their lives and I think instead of complaining about a few more cents at the gas pump more people should be praying for the families that lost their loved ones in this tragic accident. I'm sorry if this comes across as kind of short but my brother-in-law worked on that oil rig and he was scheduled to go back to work the very next day after the explosion so you can all imagine just how close to home this is to our family at this time, and you never know some of the men who lost their lives in this tragedy could have family members on this group and I am sure you can imagine how they would feel if they saw people complaining more about the cost of gas and making jokes about sopping it up with paper towels. Stepping off my soap box now and hope I didn't offend anyone.

Oh and volunteering to help with the animals. Great idea

Yeah ya know oil and water doesn't mix I really wonder sometimes why they could not just reclaim it and save the trouble of all the cleanup of the mess letting it just float around out there

I know how you feel. My cousin was 30 miles away from the rig that blew, due to transfer over yesterday although now it's not going to happen. He and his crew used their boats to help get some of the men out of the water... Praying for their families here.
