I didn't know what you and @triciayoung were even talking about so as usual, I'm snoopy and have to go find out. Actually, it IS approved in the U.S. for ferrets.

Then, I found this very interesting site that explains it completely for anyone else wondering about it. I think it's more information than I care to know but it still was interesting.

Here's another one that talks about how breeds that lay a huge amount of eggs (like Tally) are prone to health issues... And this sanctuary uses these implants to give their little bodies a break - especially hens rescued from commercial laying:

My challenge is finding a vet willing to administer since it is off label here. Used with hens in the UK, but not here in the US. Seems folks who are raising chickens as pets/eggs for their own consumption, not to sell, could get this implant for health reasons.

I didn't look into how to get it for a ferret. Maybe you do need a script for that, but I thought this could be another thing similar to how some of us get Amoxicillin that's made for aquarium fish or use various treatments for things initially intended for 4-legged animals.

It's a sub-cutaneous implant that has to be put in by a vet, so perhaps a bit trickier to get an Rx or a vet willing to do it off-label? I'll do some more research... would love to get this for Tally!

I absolutely love opensanctuary.org. They have a lot of resources for disabled chickens also. They have the "compassionate care" approach.

Yes. I have taken 3-hens to her thus far. Two of my disabled hens and one I suspected a reproductive issue. That is when I brought it up and she made that statement.
