Hello everyone! I often stalk this site but finally signed up for an account.
I just got my 20 acres in Central Oregon in Dec. 2016.
In late Feb. 2017, I got my first batch of Chickens! I have since broadened to Geese, Ducks, and Quail. Now for a total of 35 birds with 10 chicken eggs under a broody and 10 quail eggs in the incubator!
Chickens:
- Easter Eggers (3 hens, 1 Roo)
- Silver Laced Wyandottes (1 gen and 1 roo with Crossbeak)
- Cuckoo Marans (3 hens)
- Welsummers (3 hens)
- Black Australorps (2 hens)
- Salmon Faverolles (4 hens)
- Blue Langshans (3 hens)
- Bantam Black Langshan (1 roo)
-- I have 10 eggs under a broody hen. I purchased some olive Egger and BCM eggs to hatch, and added a couple of my own under that fluffy butt!
Quail:
- Bobwhite
-- 3 grown, 1 female, 2 male
-- 3 two week old chicks
-- 10 eggs in the incubator
Ducks:
I have 4 Swedish ducks. 2 blacks, 1 blue, and one is ... mostly white?
Geese:
I have three Roman cross breeds. 2 female and one is supposed to be a male.
----------
I love all my birds but my chickens are by far my favorite! I hated brooding the ducks and geese, they're DISGUSTING. As adults and OUTSIDE, I like them better - my husband loves them.
I free range my chickens and my gucks (ducks and geese collectively) are rotated between two paddocks.
I purchased my chickens based off of color of egg laid by breed. Except for the SLWs (beauty), Australorps (friend recommendation), and the Langs (cuteness factor as chicks).
-----------
In the future I hope to breed chickens, so far I have yes on breeding Langshans and Faverolles, I just love them. Even though my Faverolles are dumber than a box of rocks. I have learned to love them after one trying to commit suicide by dehydration... the water was there folks... she just didn't want to walk down to it... I tell ya, stupid. Lol
I'm not sure what else to write so there you have it! Please let me know if you have any other questions!
