HOMESCHOOLERS...any one

GiantPumpking, my son, Christopher is in public school. My two daughters will do public school on line. Not everyone who homeschools is antipublic school. Some of us just feels that homeschool is a better fit for our families. But just because homeschool is good for my daughters does not mean that it would be good for everyone's daughters.

I live in the furthest south possible, south louisiana. I wish i was homeschooled but i have issues. Well it depends on the future you want for your kids. Do you want them to have a good academic education or hands on experience. I think kids that want to go to college nees a school. The schedule and structure is different. Alot more work at an actaul school. I think its good to expose kids to hard work and for them to socialize and not have so much atte tion JUST on them. I have a homeschooled friend and she now goes to an actual school and loves it. I wish i was homeschooled because it is more hands on.

When we started homeschooling about 11 years ago it was still pretty uncommon for our area. We would often get that question and I or one of the kids would just reply that we homeschool. If that didn't satisfy them and they wanted to question my judgment as a parent I was totally game for it! I they'd either end up thinking homeschooling was cool or just plain sorry they asked me about it.

I wasn't mean or rude, I had just spent a lot of time researching before I came to the decision to homeschool so I had lots of ammo. My favorite was always when an unsuspecting pediatrician would try to grill me. One thanked me for the education. lol

We have four kids; ages 15 (16 in two weeks and we did our first driving lesson tonight! EEK!) 14, 10 and 5 (almost 6). We do a variety of things for schooling. Some text books but also a fair amount of Charlotte Mason style learning. We like unit studies though I don't really plan them. We just get excited about something and immerse ourselves in it. We love it and have felt it's been a wonderful journey so far.

FLYlady! I'm half joking, half serious. In some areas I'm organized but others I'm a terrible procrastinator and let things get too far out of hand. Some of her methods have been very helpful for me since she just does things a step at a time.

List out the pros and cons of homeschooling your kids. What are the reasons you might want to, what are the reasons you think you shouldn't go that route. Compare the lists and see where that takes you. Like others have said, there are a variety of ways to school and no one method will fit every kid, let alone every family! I have one who is dyslexic and let me tell you it was a real challenge for a few years. But we both made it out alive and we're heading for the teen years! We'll see how well we come through the raging hormones since we both have them, lol!

Homeschool Tracker (they have a free or a paid version) is a great tool for record keeping and helping me stay on schedule. It also helps to have someone to be accountable to. Hope you come to a decision that brings you peace.

Giant pumpkin peep, I am glad you are having such a great public school experience. The type of school you attend isn't an option for most people; you are lucky to have it.

I have homeschooled my boys since we pulled our oldest out of a private school during 1st grade in 2006. Our youngest went to preschool at the same private school, but he hasn't been in a school setting since then either. We started homeschooling for a variety of reasons and we continue for a variety of reasons, but those reasons don't always stay the same. We are very loose eclectics. We don't do traditional school work at all. We do lots of field trips and life learning. We tried doing "school at home" when we first pulled them out and it was a disaster for us. Our current style fits our whole family much better. Luckily, we have lots and lots of other homeschoolers around here. So many that we have to prioritize what we really want and let go of the rest.

People often ask if my kids are on break or if they have the day off of school. They now answer for themselves and usually say something like... "We are homeschooled so we have school every day and we have every day off"! I think that is really how they feel. They know that there are things to learn everyday all around them, but it hardly ever really feels like school. I know that they are behind in some things and ahead in others. I am a big believer in Better Late Than Early and have seen it in my own home. I don't push reading, but I do give my children the tools they need so that they can read when they are ready. My youngest son just recently came to me and said... "I want to read you a bedtime story", and he did! He had been struggling with reading but all of a sudden, it just clicked. Books of the type that he struggled greatly with 4mos ago, he was able to read to me almost flawlessly. I saw the same thing happen with my oldest about 6mos younger than it did for his brother. I firmly believe that if we give children the tools, they will pursue the knowledge.

OKAY,{{First, there is NO BASHING going on here just "homeschoolers" introducing them and their own families! And.PLEASE don't go there with the "Socialization" thing,oh no.The reason you and I went and go to PS is to get a EDUCATION!!!!!I am only 29 so it hasn't been that long ago for me so I know how it is in the school systems,I know how things work.NOT ALL PS SYSTEMS ARE THE SAME but the ones here I don't care for.EXAMPLES>>>>>>>Budget cuts every year, cutting teachers down to 2 teachers per grade(that raio is 1:30)that means 1 teacher no helper with 30 students.Come on what happens to the students that need the little extra help,I'll tell you BC I was a substitute teacher in PS 2 years before we started to HS,they get left behind YES left behind,no help. The school system is failing these children and I won't stand for it. I had seen way too much in our PS system to just turn my head and ingore it!!!!!!Don't even ask Why not just move?If you pay any attention to the economy at all, that will not be a good decision for us to just up and move to a better school district,Yes we do have the option to drive our child to another school but,we choose not to BC of the economy; add gas $$$$,wear and tear on your vehicle, all those miles, and then in the winter out here you are lucky to make it to your driveway.Every famiily has the right to decide what is BEST for thier child, there are some families that take advantage of that and give us a bad reputation and that is the same with the Public School System too. Now,for all the extra classes offered(GPP) our school system has only 300 students in the mddle/elementary side and maybe 325+ for the High School. They have nothing, you have to take ART every year BC they don't have anything. We actually finally got FFA back but, lost it.The teacher was a VOLUNTEER FARMER(((FREE))) but the school cannot pay him this year so we lost that again.Only Spanish,Choir 1 and 2.They have a Track Team but get this you cannnot use our school track field,WHY,no $$$ to redo it,It is very bad so no track meets are allowed at the school. But,they let the little ones run on it for PE and that is why we have sooo many kids getting hurt running,it has holes. The playground,SUCKS,nothing,no grass to play,we have 2 playgrounds(1 for K and 1 for older)the younger K has the best, grass new play areas, this is BC the can get prvate $$$.The older kids have to play on a black top area at the same time you have to dodge basketballs BC you share the same area.I am so tired of defending Homeschoolers to others do your research before you go bashing or Questioning others.
Here are some things that my son will not have to go through anymore(these are things that I had seen and witnessed at his old PS.
no running out of paper towels in the restrooms,(YES due to $$$ they have a limit at times)I actually had 2nd graders come to me and ask hoe do they dry their hands. If my son needs halp on a subject or a problem I can STOP and HELP him til he understands it,not just say figure it out we need to keep going. Here is one I was sick to my stomach when I had seen it,the library helper was a student in the 10th grade and PREGNANT,I feel that she should not be on the side of school where little ones especially 5th graders see her,you just never know what they will think,MY OWN OPINION!!!The bad language, the things he would hear fromother students.I had a BIG PROBLEM with 2 girsl constantly talking dirty on the bus,so Itook matters into my own hands.A 2nd grader telling my son how hw is planning on killing his parents.COME ON ,I took over the PTO(co-President)with my friend and wow, that opens your eyes to the bigger problems, yes there were evern more.We were loosing $$$ all over,so what does the school do,thye come to the parents and ask for more$$$$ and more donations. They have actually ran out of copy paper, finally we had enough parents that would go buy some and bring in to the school. The parents are shellin gout enough as it is,I kow that some familes can afford to but some can't afford to.Sickness>>>The school policy is if you get sent home with Head Lice you don't come back til you have a doctor slip, never ,stil to this day that school has a problem. And why BC some families can't afford to hire a babysitter or take time off of work so they send them back to school,REPEAT.Flu hit hard and teachers were coming in sick BC they couldn't afford to stay home. I am done with this for now,I need to get my day started. Thanks for well you know.

I do need to say this,I LOVE the timeI have with my family and with my son.Breakfast together(HOT,not cold) The time we have to go explore the things he wants to learn.Enjoy farming our own land, planting together.Raising the animals that we have.SOOOO much more.
God Bless You all:D

As a teacher for over 20yrs I gotta tell ya homeschooling is the best you can do for your child these days. I had seen such a drastic decline in both the private and public sectors that I really had to take a good hard look at what was going on. Many months of research and cross checking facts I found some very intersting data that I would like to share and show you how lucky you are by not having your kids in PS.
This country used to have a really decent education system all the way to the mid 60's it was at this point that statistics started to decline and through my research I found Psychiatry as the only change that was allowed to alter texts and how children learn. As the stastics declined they were brought further into our classrooms. Teachers training changed to a total Psych based program. Texts and reading books were changed and the stastics plummeted. Special Ed was formed in the name of help and the gifted were singled out. The stastics continued to decline. Teachers learned new ways to deal with ADD, ADHD labels etc., and then learned how to "spot" the victims of a further decling statistic. All the while taking the teacher away from his real job - showing kids how to learn. Schools get paid hefty sums for how many kids they have in Special Ed programs. It is their incentive to quickly turn out heavily hypnotized drugged little bodies into subdued controllable addicts when Johnny can't keep still or causes a disturbance. It used to be the teachers responsibility to handle ther class, make earning fun for those naturally energetic bodies that could not keep still now it is all the parents fault enough so that parental rights have been challenged and up until just few months ago a bill to take away all parental rights was on the table.
If a parent is approached by a teacher to put their child on antipsychotic drugs (Prozac, Ritalin etc.,) and the parent signs the stack of 2 inch thick papers they are given, then refuses to drug their child the school will take the parent to court and then will be forced by law to administer those drugs.
Drugs inhibit the intake of data and deplete the body of nutrients and vitimins. Only a clear mind, well rested, well fed and sufficient exercise makes way for the student to absorb data fully. Further, data must be understandable or children get drowsy almost hypnotic, antsy and or rowdy. You cannot learn something you do not understand and will not be apply or underatand the next step. These are the basic elements to learning and you do not need a PS for that because these days you will not get it.
I can go on and on I have tons more data but hopefully you get the jist. I applaud all you homeschool mothers for having the sense, caring enough and taking true responsibility for your kids.

It is important to note that Psychiatry got it's fame in Natzi germany in the concentration camps performing experiments on prisoners of war and is now a 300 billion dollar industry that specializes in the writing of prescriptions for the purpose of mind control and ECT.

Bless your heart, thanks for posting that.I had the same experience when my son was in PS,we had him oput in Speech BC I thought he needed it not the school. But,when I wanted him out they had a meeting with me and 3 teachers,I stood my ground and told them he is done with that class!!!They weren't happy,oh well.

Anyone use time 4 learning,I have known others to use it but I haven't.I have been thinking of trying to use a computer program for just a couple of classes.I am very eclectic,I have been pulling things here and there. So what have you all been doing, not much talking. We starting to get the garden ready and of course still hatching eggs(chicks). The weather here in Indiana is getting hot.I am not ready for this heat yet.
