Hello!

This is not an emergency, but my question still fits in this category I believe. I'm looking for people who have had experience with the hormone implant. I've done some searches on the forums and I'm not finding many firsthand accounts or details on how the implant is working out for their hen.

Backstory: I have a 4.5 year old Black Australorp hen whom I took into my vet for a suspected broken egg. (My vet has chickens of her own and sees exotics.) No sign of a broken egg inside but upon examination, vet said my hen has SO MANY egg follicles inside... even asking me to confirm her age. I also told her that my hen has not really slowed down laying wise. She still lays 4 eggs a week on average. She suspects she has some sort of reproductive disorder and recommended I try the implant. I think she's typically hesitant to do the implant, but she knows that my chickens are my pets (I will never be consuming them). She warned me not to eat her eggs if she were to start laying again while on the implant. I was told the implant lasts 6-9 months, depending on the chicken.

She's had the implant now for almost two weeks. I haven't seen her acting weird in any way, no noticeable side effects. She's been doing great. But, in the last several days, she has laid two eggs. I will be contacting my vet to ask about this to see if it's normal, if it's not normal, etc. But I was hoping others may share their experiences with me. How common is it for a chicken to lay while it's got the implant? Anyone know?

If the implant completely stopped her laying, I'd be open to continuing to get the implant. I assume it will greatly reduce the chances of her having a reproductive issue, hopefully prolonging her life, or at least her quality of life. It's hard to stomach the cost every 6-9 months if it's not going to stop the laying though.

Other notes I thought may be worth mentioning but am uncertain if they're linked to her reproductive disorder:
• She is the broodiest girl. Is happy to stay broody even if I block off nesting boxes -- she'll perch on her roost and brood away. I have figured out how to break her of her broodiness, although it takes several days to a week. She tends to go broody every month during the late spring and summer.
• She's never been great at molting. She tends to lose a handful of feathers in the fall, then stops molting. She then will attempt to finish her molt in December/January (when it's cold here in Ohio)... which has always worried me.

Thanks in advance for any info, details, etc. Just hoping to gain some insight or perspective on how to move forward with my hen.

I don't hear very many people who get implants for their chickens, but I found some articles that discuss them, and I hope that helps.

Thank you! I'll take a look. :)

Update: My hen has now laid 3 eggs! I did talk to my vet. She said that it can take a little time for the hormone implant to get the ovary to stop producing follicles for eggs. If she already had follicles on her ovary, they will turn into eggs until her ovary stops producing follicles.

Good info. Probably basic reproductive stuff that I'm just naive about. I feel a little better now. 😅

I have had 2 chickens with implants - one to stop EYP and the other since she had a hernia, it worked really well for both. One needed a new implant every 3 months, the other needed a new implant every 7 months.
This is really helpful info. I'm very curious to see how long the implant will work for my girl. Thank you for sharing!

I just got my girl, Thyme, a hormone implant back in August. She was very swollen and lost all her feathers on her butt. The vet suspects a reproductive disease or complication (she's had reproductive infections previously). She is 18 months old.

After two months, Thyme has lost over a half pound and her swelling is noticeably down. She has also regrown all her butt feathers! She seems to have more energy and is healthier overall. She stopped laying eggs almost immediately, though I've heard every chicken reacts differently. She's doing very well on it and the vet recommended we keep getting a new implant every time she starts laying again.

I hope this helps your girl heal. Good luck!

My Isa Brown's 2nd implant lasted around 2 months, she is back laying egg today. I am very disappointed and if she is back to laying massive eggs 7 days a week, she will have reproductive issue again. I don't want to give her another implant as her 2nd one only last 2 months.

I encourage my chickens to go broody, this is because I thought this will give their system a break from producing eggs. They warm up the emptied nest box, I use dog boxes to accommodate them whenever I have a few on broodiness. I just make sure I have them out 1 a day for an hour or so to eat and exercise. It lasted around 2 - 3 weeks, then I lock them out of the nest box, a week later they stopped their broodiness and it took another month for them to return to egg laying. But with my ISA Brown, she does not have broodiness in her.

Good morning! I have a 5 year old EE named Big Stink. She was being picked on by the big flock and came to live with me as a house chicken 2 years ago. Stinkers lays a gorgeous blue/green egg approximately every 18 hours, and that just too many eggs, in my opinion. Stink was out of her mind at first, loud, always hot and panting, and has the stinkiest poo you can imagine. By out of her mind, it was like she was itchy or uncomfortable and wanted to escape her body. I really don't know how else to describe it.

I talked to my vet about the suprelorin implant, and Stink got her first implant about a year and a half ago. within a few days, she stopped overheating, her poop didn't smell as bad, and she calmed down a lot. The implant lasts 2 months, but I've stretched it out to 4, and no eggs in all this time. I can tell when the implant is wearing off because she gets hot and stinky again.

I don't know if the implants lose their effectiveness over time, or if Stinky has just gotten used to it, because it seems like she gets hot and stinky after just a month now.

Another side effect is that Stink seems to be constantly molting.

I've lost too many beloved birds to egg laying/reproductive issues, and I didn't want Big Stink to go through that as well. I'm glad that we took this route, and we will continue with the implants.
