Houdans

I apologize to any Houdan peeps who see this post on other threads. Feel free to just respond once if you qhave some info. I picked up some Mottled Java Pullets (hatch around April 24) and have just been informed by a member that they are Mottled Houdans; as they both have 5 toes..... I'll be looking for info as they grow. They both seem healthy to me so far! Any pointers are appreciated!

Cute chickies. They are so much fun as they grow out their "afro" as my daughter calls it. They get into some weird looking stages with their "hair".

Enjoy.

I don't show but I think according to the SOP houdans aren't supposed to have wattles- I plan to choose breeders with the smallest or no wattles to try to bring the right characteristics back. (Well I sold my mottled houdans but will use the same principle when breeding the polish, crevecoeurs, etc)
That is true on wattles, however, the boys do turn red in the wattle location and mine had the slightest bit of red skin there, not enough to really call it a wattle, but boy those horns sure came in! And with my boys the horns kind of indicated their personality as they were a bit bi-polar. They would attack your back but if you sat down they would jump in your lap to be petted.

I gotta get back into posting here.

I have hatched a lot of Mottled Houdans this year. I kept one pullet that at 10 weeks has the most amazing crest I have seen. She is gorgeous. Sold all the rest before I could grow them out. I am still hatching, but they are selling like hot cakes, so will most likely breed for my own keeping this summer.

Here is the male I am using. He does have a little too much wattle showing, but his type is the best I have, and his colour is nice and dark. I have two breeding pens with 3 girls in each.

So glad to see you back and hear you are busy with the birds again. I will have to slip over and see an update on your farm progress.

I have one of @aoxa 's houdan pullets. She is the sweetest little thing and so beautiful. I'll post some pics of her soon!
My mum came by to visit and wanted a picture taken with her holding on of my chickens, so I grabbed her the sweetest and calmest one! My little houdan I got from @aoxa
(I nicknamed her Sheena after the song XD )

Great pic! We take our houdy girl to all kinds of kids events because she loves to be held.
