hova bator inference with any speakers.

Hi BYC,

I have 2 hova bator 1602n (incubator and hatcher) that runs simultaneously. Each times the heater turns off it interferes with the speaker of the radio and the speakers of the TV's media system. Even though the speakers are more than 10 metres/yard away (say the incubators are in the basement and the TV is upstairs in another room) the incubators still creates interference with the speakers (some kind of grizzling sound just like an untunned TV/radio) :(

Can any one help please?

Thanks in advance,

David

Sorry, the following is a copy and paste for just a little info..

"What Causes Interference? Interference occurs when undesired radio signals or electromagnetic "noise" sources are picked up by consumer electronics products -most often telephones, audio equipment, VCRs or TVs. It usually results in noise, unwanted voices or distorted TV pictures. In most cases, the source is nearby.

There are three common types of interference: (1.) Noise: Interference can be caused by an electromagnetic noise source. Defective neon signs, bug zappers, thermostats, electrical appliances, switches or computer systems are just a few of the possible sources of this type of interference. Both you and your neighbors may be suffering from its effects. In some cases, the noise may be the result of a dangerous arc in electrical wiring or equipment and may provide warning of an unsafe condition that should be immediately located and corrected."

And a link that might be comprehensive enough about electromagnetic interference, which is what I think you are dealing with. My bet is if it plugged onto a different circuit than your equipment that *might* not happen. No matter what part of the house, I mean a different circuit in the walls wiring. Have you already tried and see what happens? Do both of them cause it?

Here to learn also! :pop

ETA: I also have a 1602N.

Thanks EggSighted4Life, this is informative. I have troubleshooted 3 scenarios:

1) Both hova bator 1602n interfere with the radio. I unplugged each separately and when the thermostat turns off then inference happens for about 3 seconds.

2) I used my 25m extension, kept the hova bator where they are and plugged the extension lead on the other side of the house about 20m away. The inference still happened.

3) I unplugged one incubator (the one next to the radio), plugged the other incubator to the other side of the house (20m away), the inference still happens.

For the same reasons I believe you cannot test a radio on a hi-fi at an electronic store because there are too many electronic equipment around. Also interesting that it only happens when the thermostat turns off, it doesn't happen when the incubator turns on.

May I ask you a favour please? Would you hear any interference (especially when the thermostat turns off) if you were to plug a radio next to the incubator?

Many thanks,

David

Ha, I would totally do it... but I have to see where I might scrounge up a radio at...

Any other devices I can try? I'm pretty able to hear interference in general when it happens. It's pretty annoying!

I love a good mystery, and it definitely intrigues me that it happens when it shuts OFF! :hmm

Consider calling the company???

Hey EggsSighted4Life,
I was too shy to email the local distributor so thanks for your support and I did eventually email them. This is the answer I got:

"Hi There, You could try a car radio supressor, I think thats what they are called. I think the fit them to electrical items in cars so that you dont get radio interference. Im not sure if they still do but years ago it was someting that could get done, Try phoning a car radio install place and ask them, they may have a better idea. You maybe able to fit it on the thermostat, but it would pay to run it past an electrician first."

Cheers

Have you tried a RFI filter? Plug that into the wall socket, then the radio into the filter. Should eliminate any interference.
I know, that doesn't fix the how and why it's happening. I'd like to know why and how the thermostat is causing the interference when it's off? Stray voltage leaking somewhere.

Thanks Sean, will try that and see what happen.

Out of context but might as well ask, please? Would you know the percentage of quail eggs being pecked when the hens are raised on sawdust/mulch in comparison to a wire floor? I was told to forecast 5 to 10% egg loss due to pecking.

Cheers

Sorry, I don't have any idea what percentage would get peck. I raise my quail in large outdoor enclosures. Natural cover, grasses, logs and limbs to climb on and hide. The hens tend to lay their eggs all over the enclosure. I don't see any eggs that have been broken by them pecking. The only time their on wire is when their in the brooder.

I like your style Sean, your enclosure must be pretty cool! I too don't have the heart to raise them on the wire all the way. Brooder is kind of different because of the heat lamp and hygiene issue so we're on the same page. May I ask please:

(1) what is your area per bird roughly? Would it be one square foot per bird or would it be more?

(2) do you sell your eggs for eating? If so, what do you sell them as? It cannot be caged eggs, perhaps barn eggs but that wouldn't be fair either, I was thinking of a 'aviary eggs' to differentiate myself from the others that obviously do the wire thing.

(3) New Zealand is a chicken country and quail feed is super expensive if not really hard to find. Eg I need to buy a ton, have a forklift, a big storage place. I was thinking of mixing chicken feed with horse soy meal to raise the protein content. What do you think?

Many thanks,

David
