So I noticed Susan had runny poop and I looked it up on Google. The first thing that came up was BYC, and the post I read was so good the site immediatly captivated my interest. A few days later I had some other chicken question, and again, BYC came up first. So I began to lurk on the forums for a few weeks, getting the answers to every chicken question I had preiviously had, hesitating to join because I didn't know it was free. When I found out membership was free, I joined up immediatly!
 
A few years ago I wanted to get chickens and was researching. I read tons and even printed out stuff from the learning center but didn't join until last year.

I wanted to get chickens but I knew they were like any other pet (can't have butchery chickens with my roommate, everything is a pet) that was going to need food, water and shelter. There was no way I was going to figure that out AFTER I got the chicks so I started reading up on coops which brought me here. I was very quickly distracted by how many breeds there were and decided that starting out with half a dozen or so might be a bit much so we got three. Now I want to add three more (chicken math attack); thank you 'breeds' tab. Anyway, I didn't have a clue on how to care for chicks so I googled 'how to care for chicks' where brought me here again. :P Like a lot of people I lurked for a while but that was mainly because I didn't have chickens and I didn't think it would feel right being on a chicken forum without chickens!
 
My story is similar to chippysmom. I knew I wanted to keep chickens and, except for some minor exposure to my grandmother's free ranging flock as a small child, I had no clue what to do...so I decided I needed to research the subject. I found My Pet Chicken first but quickly found the link to BYC. I lurked and read and read and lurked for about a year before I finally joined. I joined once I made up my mind that this was definitely something I wanted to pursue and mostly because there are some fun and fascinating folks on this forum and I wanted to be able to communicate with them. Almost two years and thirteen chickens later, I'm still here and still learning something every day. I'm about to get my first taste of bantams courtesy of a friend (met her here on BYC) who is giving me a Silver Duckwing OEGB rooster this weekend. I've got another friend who wants to trade me some Serramas for a few of my RIRs so I'm diversifying my flock. Wish me luck!
 
I found BYC when I first started researching the idea of having chickens. I would Google a question and the answer was always from a BYC forum. I found the plans for my coop here, the breeds of chickens I wanted (GREAT list), and now I'm reading about sand in my coop and run. It's wonderful how everyone shares their knowledge. My next search will be for the elusive chicken coin purse...
 
I found BYC by googling chickens as I had decided I wanted chickens, or more so my daughter begging for chickens after she met my friends flock. So I thought I'd look into it to see what all is required. Several links came to BYC and I saw many pins on Pintrest as well. Then I started reading post after post on some of the same questions I had and even questions I didn't have.

We don't have chickens yet but I have definitely decided that we will have them soon. I am still in the planning stages of the coop and run and on the exact location on our property. Hopefully will start on the coop in the next month or so hopefully it won't take that long to build so I can put in my order. :-)

I have really enjoyed this fountain of information and I'm sure will continue to enjoy it and learn so much more.

How I found Byc. Well it was after school and i let the chickens out and i was searching something. then every time it was something about chickens it would take me here! Then i said i will make one of these and here I am. That was a year ago!
 
Hi, I'm monkeyboysnana. real name is Barbie. I live in southern Michigan. I found Backyard Chickens because I had chickens "forced" into my life a few months back by my housemate. He kept wanting to get more and more, and one day he came home with 24 new birds about 4 months old. Several days later, I found one dead on the barn floor and another the next day. He was clueless and I checked online to learn more myself. Found you! Well, my housemate has since moved on and left the chickens here. I would like to keep them but am worried about caring for them properly. I think I will become a frequent visitor here and perhaps have quite a few questions too. I have Isa Browns, Gersey Giants, White Leghorn (I think), sexlink? and a few Americaunas. I am hoping to be able to post good pictures soon in the event I have misidentified any. Happily, I have been getting eggs for a few weeks now though all of them are not laying. I have several "customers" who want to buy on a regular basis. I'm looking forward to meeting many of you. I have enjoyed seeing so many different birds, and all the stories I've read so far.

Wow...kudos to you for keeping them and caring for them. It's not their fault your former housemate deserted them and left them behind. The longer you are on BYC you'll find that chickens, basically, are NOT hard to care for. A secure shelter, food, water, and a bit of attention paid to watching for things like worms and/or mites and that's about it. I have 18 birds and except for approximately 15 minutes in the mornings and about 30 minutes in the afternoon/evening they pretty much take care of themselves. AND they are such a joy to have around. It's soothing just sitting and listening to them and it's fun to watch them interact, especially if they are playing a game of chicken keep-away with a tasty bug or cherry tomato I've thrown into their run. Now that I have them, I can't imagine going back.
