How Did YOU Find BYC? Why Did YOU Join It? Tell Your Story HERE!

I found it in 2008 when I was desperatley(sp?) Searching for help because the city we lived in and my (now ex) husband conspired to take our pet dwarf dutch bunny and bantam barred rock hen from us. I fell out of the forum for years but the people here were so compassionate and so helpful that I remembered five years later after moving and now that I have internet agin I'm back :)
Aw, what a tale! Thanks for sharing; welcome back!

I found it a few times when I made searches about ameraucanas. I had just gotten my first batch of 4 chicks and the feed store told me they were ameraucanas, I didn't really know much about chicken breeds at the time and after reading some threads I realized they were really easter eggers. After that I started looking through the different threads and exploring the site. I started researching common health problems, the "what breed/gender is this?", and of course the hatching egg thread! Eventually I stopped lurking and signed up.

Woohoo, another story! :D That's sorta like me, but I just wanted chickens and was doing searches for pictures of the breeds I was drooling over.

My husband brought home chicks and we had no clue how to take care of chickens and every question I googled brought me here!

I joined this forum recently after years of lurking because I had a specific poultry medical question I could not find an answer for and this seemed the most likely place to get one. Why here?

Several years ago we moved from "a major city in the Pacific Northwest" to this steaming-hot rural paradise in Florida. A few months later my wife's older son came to stay for a few months bringing with him about a dozen 4-6-month-old chickens in a couple of large plastic bins. Along with typical hens he had one already-large loud rooster and several bantam roosters and I hear it was quite a trip. All of us were starting nearly from zero with keeping chickens and there is only one way to learn, when you are set adrift in the jungle* as we were. That would be Google.

We have researched coops, feed, feeding and watering methods, egg-laying anomalies, predators from mite-sized to coyote, bumble-foot and bumble-foot surgery and much more. You quickly learn that a Google hit at BYC is almost always more useful than others.

We researched butchering and, many pounds of home-grown chicken later, I believe we have it down pretty well. BTW, I strongly recommend that anyone learning how to butcher chickens not start with Bantam roosters unless you have really small hands. I do not. On the other hand, if you have Bantam roosters and want a more peaceful environment for all those sweet hens not to mention yourself and want to try Coq au Vin....

A forum is only as good as the quality of information on it, and BYC has members who know what they are talking about and are willing to share. It's a great resource.

[This is a long way of saying about the same thing as the previous post.]

* Extra points if you spotted the mixed metaphor.
