Look on the bright side - it will give you time to save your money, do your research, build your coop....

i have three flocks.
the free-range layers: a dark brown leghorn, a barred rock, a wheaten ameraucana, and a black silkie cross.
the young bantams: silkies (white and partridge), seramas, a serama mix cockerel, a blue modern game bantam and an Easter Egger pullet (when she's old enough she'll be with the free-rangers)
the old bantams include my first flock and some of thier mix breed offspring: a lavender dutch, a black rosecomb, old english bantams (BB Red and silver duckwing), a black cochin, silkie mixes and cochin mixes.

i also have a house chicken named tiny. she's the hen in my avatar. she has a crippled foot and she's mostly blind but she's a very sweet girl. she's definatly my favorite! i'll be getting a pair of seramas (hopefully cocopop) from jerry schexnayder, the top serama breeder in the country! i'm really excited that since seramas are my favorite breed!

If it's illegal to have them were you are. You can still look for someone close in your area to work with and learn from, before you know it you'll be out of college and able to pick a house where you can have chickens and all the things you learned from 4-H, or a friendly chicken keeper will be ready to put to use. I've always wanted a barnyard, while i was young I was always around someone with animals. now all that knowledge has come in very handy--I have my donkey and hopefully

, my husband will be able to start on converting a playhouse into a coop soon. I have 4 chickens books, 2 horse books, this website and a husband who has several FFA awards for horse keeping.

Sorry, but your problem is exactly the opposite of my problem. I'm getting MORE poultry, and don't know exactly what to do! I'm going to tak care of them, yes, but I hope my brother keeps his guineas away from my turkeys! Anyways, all I did was, whn I had to move, we looked for a nice house, and I looked for one with chickens. Only one had them, and we took it. If you want chickens, all you need is a never-failing attitude towards chickens. I've wanted them for 2 years. Also, give them all the pros. Yours will probably be easier to handle then mine. You wanted silkies right? Bantam breed, quiet and docile. Lays small eggs, and usually likes to be held. They'll also eat bugs.

If you are in 4-H or FFA you are allowed to have chickens even in areas not zoned for them.
You just have to go to the city and fill out the proper paperwork.

I don't know about all states, but it's that way here in Florida.
