How is your flock today?

Oh wow, that sounds like an awesome arrangement. I loved your other pictures you posted, might you have some of the cabin? :)
Absolutely! This is b4 me moving in. Just file photos after a clean and mow. May not look like much but "you should have seen it before"

I thought I had posted of my plan to go up to keep me and the chooks cool for the summer, maybe work on restoring furniture... 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ So sorry for any repeats. I will try to get you up to speed and then go from there. The plan was to turn an old Hawaiian style horse trailer into a cheap coop for the chooks.

once I had my plan on how to make it work for what I needed, walk-in, slope, roof. We built and then trailered the parts up. I had found T posts on Craigslist, used leftover chicken wire and ripped 2'4s into 2x2s. With the 2x4 wire, t posts, lumber and hardware my total cost was under $250. And that was at the heigh of the lumber prices and on Kauai. So, we did well $ wise for chicken lodging.

I was in heaven! I absolutely loved every second of it. Now here is the 'buts'.... MIL got stuck on Kauai as the covid numbers climbed. Main caretaker daughter had just been to Colorado to visit her boy as the numbers blew up. So the MIL's sons opted to keep her here safe till things settled. I'm married to one son so we had Friday eve till Monday. I had to travel down and help out F- M because MIL has dementia and it is all hands on deck. She did come up a few times, she absolutely loves it up there and has lots of history and memories of Koke'e in her childhood but we opted for home being the best, safest, as small as it is.

I doubled the run size to go up the bank that they loved so I would be able to leave with better peace of mind. There were no predators up there. Not a one. I payed the kid next door to keep his eye on but after a few weekends I would just run up and check on Saturday or Sunday. They had plenty room, I just missed them and am sure they missed me.
We had a blast. They went everywhere in the forest snacking on fallen guava and snacking on dandelion and a new flavor of grass seeds. But there were also little to no bugs.

I can understand that, but once you hatch ducklings and fall in love with them :love You too will now have a mixed flock! :gig

I know you like the larger breeds of birds, how about given these guys a try! :gig :lau Check out the link below, they sell eggs! LOL

Yes, I like the bigger bird's (chicken's). I'm going to try the duck's, but that ostrich is just too big. I don't think that I would like to have one of those kicking me. I used to play one of those old video machines year's ago that was called Joust, and they had those ostrich being ridden in it.

I, for some odd reason, thought it would be a good idea to do a big hatch. I had filled my incubator and hired 2 shelves from a friend. 62-64? Eggs in all with 57 hatching. So I brought my brooder up

Then I met Forest.

Then started trapping and friending ferals, fixing and homing or colonies down the mountain away from the fragile ecosystem up there. Then I got involved with the Greater Good charities big trap/spay/neuter on Kauai... I was also able to fix gates and fences, deal and schedule tree trimmers and go for lots and lots and lots of walks- every chance I could get. It was great to unplug and stay cool.
I left everything up there and hope to make this a summer thing for this old woman and her chickens.
I sold all chicks in under 1 month. I have only this super (returned) cutie and I like him so much and he is working with the flock... so... working with the flock works for me. We shall see. (His daddy behind)

I'll leave you with these photos from my walks. This may have been one of the most (top 10) amazing times in my life. What an opportunity I had to go reboot my head and heart with little to no distraction much of the time. The air was fresh and filled with the smell of Kahili ginger, molasses grass and a forest of eucalyptus, guava and koa.
