How is your flock today?

Pics
How's the chicks @BlueBaby?

3 had hatched, but I had to cull one right away. The other 2 are doing good in the brooder so far. That was just a small test hatch from my own flock from my red NN girl's eggs only.

I do however have more egg's in there that are due to hatch on the 21st that I got from someone else that are from an Aloha rooster over some Lakeshore Egger hen's. These are to bring more colored egg's into the NN Aloha's. The girl's can be kept and then bred back to my NN Aloha cockerel when the are old enough. They won't be closely related that way, and some of those girl's could carry the Aloha's molting gene from their father.

My kids are shaping up to look a little bit like something. I think I see 3 boys if judging by feathers and legs.

I am not that savvy on chicken breeding... must have more coffee... :caf
So, what traits are you hoping will stand out in your new breed? I find this truly fascinating though I most likely killed off too many braincells to wrap my head completely around your potential answer so if you respond, respond like you are writing too a 10 year old... ok... maybe 15.... please.
We... have lots of feral chickens here as you know. I mean really... Kauai is LITTERED with them. I thought I would breed or try to keep 1/4 of the feral in my flock but they keep the flighty and broody traits that make them challenging. Like no fence is high enough and they are broody after ever 7-10 eggs. on the plus side, these are efficient and resourceful birds and I have great respect. They seem to be tolerant of diseases that my domestics are not and even though they mind the heat, they seem to survive it with a bit more style.

I think we chatted a bit about this but please humor me and hopefully, since this is your passion, you will enjoy explaining to me again. :D:p

Well, the Lakeshore Egger's aren't as big a breed that I would like, but I am bringing them in to mix with my Naked Neck Aloha's to get those large sized different colored egg's. I can always work on the size of my bird's later.

In the first generation of chick's, some of them can carry the pretty molting gene from their Aloha father, but will not show it. After I keep the pullet's and breed those back to the Naked Neck Aloha cockerel that I have here and hatch out the chick's, some of that Aloha coloring will start showing up. So, I still have some work to do on them.

Edit: The Lakeshore egger's are supposed to not be a broody breed and are friendly, so that is also a plus.

This is the Naked Neck/Aloha cockerel that the Aloha/Lakeshore pullet's from those egg's will be bred to. He already has the molted gene of the Aloha. The rooster in my avatar to the left is a regular Aloha. I also have a few of the regular Aloha pullet's that are due to start laying egg's soon, and they have the colorful molting feather's too.
