how long before a chicken starts laying?

According to literature - Around 18 weeks

But it is nature not literature that determines the when.

If mine were scheduled per the catalog and when they should lay..... in a perfectly scheduled world, I should get my first egg week of Sept 27th.....but I am not betting money on it! Chaos is so cool! And Random makes life interesting.

They seem to lay somewhere around 20 weeks...give or take an eternity.

Depends on the BREED. My Chinese Langshams n Jersey Giants took a whole year. USUALLY 4-6 months on regular size breeds. The first month or two the eggs are smaller than when the birds are more mature n will be more consistent laying. I think the silver wyndottes have been our best overall layers.
