How many of you have your chicks in your house?

She was lonely so she went in with the babies, supervised of course. she wound up with 8 out of 10 under her. So cute!

You guys are my kind of people!!! LOL. Of course when I told her that over 100 people on my chicken website have them in their houses til they are old enough to go outside too, she had something snarky to say. I dont care. They are going in the basement tomorrow, though. They have been upstairs until now so I could keep an eye on them, but they are way too big for the rubbermaid container now, seeing that they are getting crazy! So I am going to put together a large pen in the basement. I dont want to put them out in the chicken coop yet because I have only been using it for a few weeks and dont trust it for the little guys yet. It is old and I dont know if I have all of the holes patched up yet........

We have two Rubbermaid-style brooders in the kitchen. We keep chicks in there until about two weeks old, then they go to the attached, enclosed shed in a large "pen" we made out of some framing and a giant piece of old felt cloth. Shavings on the floor of that, a heat lamp suspended from above. When it was really chilly (shed is not insulated and therefore is whatever temp it is outside) we had a couple heat lamps. I turned them off lately as the chicks are feathering up pretty quickly AND the youngest chicks have about 25 older chicks to burrow into for warmth. I've heard no "I'm COLD!" peeping.

We kept the first batch of chicks ever int he house until about three weeks old, but now I'm taking them out a week early assuming they are eating fine and what not.

I don't find the chicks smelly but lots of poo can be. We try to keep up in adding fresh shavings to keep the smell at bay. The worst thing about chicks in the house is tracking shavings all over on our feet. Just gets everywhere.

I am so glad that we not alone. We have our brooder in the living room with 6 babies in it.

When I hatched a bigger batch of chicks I kept them out in my insulated shed. This time I had a terrible hatch and only got one so I'm keeping him and the friend I got him at the feed store in my living room. It's been fun having them right there and the mess with just two isn't very bad.

Over fifty little chicks of all ages in the house right now and more hatching as I type. This is the time of year to have babies in the house, isn't it? Last month I had 2 bottle baby goats in the house....And

once upon a time I even had a newborn Jersey heifer in the kitchen!

I love having chicks in the house, they create is so much "dust" that I don't even try to keep up with it until they are outside! lol
